10 Tips for the GOP in 2010
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 01-10-10 | CLARK S. JUDGE

Voters who want Democrats out don't yet believe Republicans would be better.

It is an old rule of politics. When your opponent is in the process of destroying himself, don't get in his way. Despite tanking poll numbers both for themselves and their president, congressional Democrats have persisted for months in a stunning act of political self-destruction. The evaporation of home-state support for Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson and the retirements of Christopher Dodd and Byron Dorgan should give the White House and the congressional majority pause, but to date they haven't.

So should Republicans repair to the sidelines and watch the minions of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi strut over the cliff?

Not a chance.

Taking back the House and perhaps the Senate in 2010—not just doing well—will require winning back trust lost between 2000 and 2006. Here are the top 10 things the GOP must do in 2010:

Actually a pretty good list. The GOP needs to incorporate these into a “Contract with America,” and they need to do this every election. Just they cannot survive just by watching the Ds do stupid stuff and then try to “tone down the stupid stuff.”

The GOP is ‘Rat lite. The same forces that control ‘Rats control the ‘Phants. Until the GOP makes actual cuts, it’s the SOS.

FIRE STEELE, HIRE CARL ROVE= WIN CONGRESS in NOVEMBER.

Do you think there is a real possibility of that happening? I'm all for it. But, if we fire Steele, the GOP might lose it's Black support......I'm talking all 4 votes.

I think he hit well with those ten items, but I’d further demand some language, and of course some action on an energy policy that would set us back on course very quickly especially with making the tax cuts permanent.

Remember, Carl Rove was George Bush's man in Washington and and would take the Bush curse with him. The Donks would have a ball with that one. It's a non-starter.

A good list, IMHO.

-#8,9,10 are apparent to conservatives and “street-level” GOP’ers, but I think there are still some at the top who don’t get it. Those guys (The Nat’l GOP, etc.) blew it when they held the reins, at least on the size of government and spending. Take your medicine and get back to the things that brought you to power in the first place (hint: it wasn’t more government spending), guys.

#1 is as timeless as it is correct. We saw a bit of Reaganism on display in Bob McDonnell’s (successful) campaign in Virginia. We need a lot more of that.

All 10 points are solid. I am sure the ‘GOP insiders’ will promptly ignore them.

What we DON’T need is Amnesty for Illegals Karl Rove back again. Good riddance to that loser. Let him go work for his pals at La Raza.

I think they should attack cap & trade on the science. Earth’s atmosphere is not a backyard greenhouse. Western technology has the best pollution free industry etc. Should not spend any money on such a weak theory.

Too much to sell the masses in a campaign IMO. The policies that need to be addressed in the campaign have to be consumable to the public without glazing over the eyes.

FReepers understand the cap and trade situation, but most folks would look around for somebody smart to tell ‘em what to do, and that’s a situation where the Left pretends better.

Oil, Drill here, drill now.
Nukes, Build here, build now.

That sort of thing with a commonsense energy promise along with the ten points in Mr. Judges article IMO should do it.

Jobs

Except for our military, the federal government shoould not be in the "jobs" business.

Jobs should be in the private sector.

The problem today is, the government is destroying the private sector so businesses are not hiring.

3) Start talking about the need to reform Social Security and Medicare. Swing voters know these programs could devastate federal finances. They want assurance that politicians know this, too, and are committed to fixing them. Talk of reforming these programs is no longer the third rail of politics. It will win the swing voters' respect.

Going to be nearly impossible to do this given the "don't mess with Medicare" mantra of both the GOP and the Tea Party groups as it relates to health care.

7. The House and Senate GOP caucuses should walk away from earmarks, leaving Democrats alone to defend this symbol of D.C.'s degeneracy.

Well, good luck with that one. But, it would be a marvelous start.

Thanks for the ping, GOP_Lady
