WASHINGTON Federal health care reform will require most Northern New Yorkers but not all, it turns out to carry health insurance or risk a fine.
Hundreds of Amish families in the region are likely to be free from that requirement.
The Amish, as well as some other religious sects, are covered by a "religious conscience" exemption, which allows people with religious objections to insurance to opt out of the mandate. It is in both the House and Senate versions of the bill, making its appearance in the final version routine unless there are last-minute objections.
Although the Amish consist of several branches, some more conservative than others, they generally rely upon a community ethic that disdains government assistance. Families rely upon one another, and communities pitch in to help neighbors pay health care expenses.

>Hey brother freepers. Dont we have a barn to raise or something this month?
Yessum, brother posterchild. Right after you fix mah carriage, and place 17 inch rims on them.
It would be great if the only people not exempt were the leftist mainstream “Protestant” churches and non-Orthodox Jews, who happen to be the groups most likely to have supported 0bama.
We don’t have health insurance. We’re in a Christian Share Ministry program where we share each others major medical bills. I heard that there is an exemption for these types of programs also. It will be interesting to see. We haven’t had health insurance for probably 10 years or so, but our bills have always been paid.
I have no problem with the Amish exemption, but does that mean fat old grumpy white men can also opt out?
Sisters, let’s get the quilting frame up!
Do you want those rims in oak or hickory?
I’ll trade you 3 butter churns for a quilt. Let’s keep this trade off the books and untaxed.
Every OTHER Sunday is a "Church Sunday", held in the homes of the "church district" on a rotating basis.

Well Im Amish baby now.
I have to convince my husband to grow a chin beard.
3 lbs should be sufficient - just ring that bell by Kelly McGillis’ house and I’ll come by to pick it up.
I have a feeling the “Amish” population is about to add a lot of converts.
If the final bill includes funding for abortion, couldnt millions of Catholics and conservative Protestants obtain religious conscience exemptions?
I am scheduling a bonnet fitting ;)
LOL!
Wonder if buying an amish fireplace would count.
