Me, too, and I have a Haflinger horse who draws a carriage to prove it. Leave me alone, Big Gov’t! I’m Amish!

After Hillary and J. F’ing Kerry (who served in Vietnam, you know) found their Jewish roots, I find a stirring of Amish blood in me, that I will use to resist the coming onslaught of “Health Care”.

I married a man with mennonite/Pennsylvania Deutch background and I weave baskets, so I think I am well on my way.

“My Amish name is Annie Stoltzfus”

That is my name. Annie Stolzfus must be a very popular name.

We belong to Samaritan Ministries, based out of Peoria, Illinois. Used to be in Washington, Illinois. We send money each month to whoever the Ministry designates our money to go to.

My husband had a small surgery a couple of years ago and it was wonderful to watch the money come in in checks ranging from $70 to $300. We ended up with about the whole amount which made just a tiny deductible that we had to pay. The amount you pay depends on the size of your family and what packages you sign up for. We are on the regular plan, the extended plan and automotive plan. We pay around $250 a month for the two of us because we are in all the plans.

Thanks for the reply. My sister-in-law was (perhaps still is) in a similar group. I will have to ask her if same one....not sure if they were involved because they are small business owners or because they do missions work.

The Amish population will skyrocket.

I trully think it will esp. with related groups like Mennonite and Brethren, etc.

“So do you think there will be a huge influx of folks finding their “Amish roots” in 2010?!”

That is a real point to consider, and not particularly difficult for anyone who will take the time to read only the number of pertinent history texts that can fit into a standard-sized briefcase . . . or at most, a salesman's catalog case.

Suggestions: Just get a set of Kenneth Latourette’s works on Church History, or contact Prairie Fire Press in Arnold, Missouri.

Thousands and thousands of Christian ministers already legally opt out of social security within two years of their ordination, and pay no FICA taxes. This means at retirement they do not collect any social security benefits either. Perhaps this is a fact little known. It is certainly legal, and based on the stated conviction against such pensions. Why should this be different with health care?

Further, many of the same large mass of Christian ministers already use health care cost-sharing plans which are NOT insurance. These plans place a large number of ministers and their families (worldwide; some pastors, some evangelists, some missionaries) into groups which actually submit their health care needs and expenses to the group, and these are published in a form of “prayer letter.” The members of that group contribute to the payment of each other's health care bills, and they spend time praying for each other.

That system works, but according to the web site of one of the organizations which coordinate health care cost-sharing, Sameritan International, these plans will not be acceptable under the Obama/Reid/Pelosi healthcare takeover.

Back to the Amish. It is very easy to see other groups winning the same exemption: Mennonites (at least Old Order Mennonites), German Baptists, and others.

Equal protection under the law, if still a concept to which anyone still pays attention, would mean that you cannot merely exempt the Amish; other groupings would fit the same criteria both in principle and in practice.

So add to the Amish and the others, all Baptists who still operate without insurance, and can show that they never have believed in insurances.

The historical, philosophical, and “distinctive” connection between the Amish and Anabaptists (e.g. Mennonites and Baptists) is not difficulty to document.

Most mention of Baptists (and I think especially on FR pages) brings to the mind of most the largest non-Catholic denomination in the United States, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). But if you find a figure for the number of SBC churches in the USA, you can count an at-least equal number of independent Baptist churches, and a very great number of those churches’ pastors are opt outs of the Social Security system. Of those, a large percentage have a genuine conviction against buying insurances.

Having opted out of the Social Security system (they don't pay in, and they receive no benefits), especially if they buy no other insurance policies, health or life, a strong precedent has been set for their also opting out of any national health insurance scheme.

To the degree that a church, a denomination, or its individual ministers have already willingly participated in government encroachment (e.g. church incorporation, 501(c)(3) exemption, “Faith-Based” programs accepting government funds, Social Security, denomination health insurance, etc)-—to that degree they would have many problems establishing and proving any genuine conviction for opting out of a national health care scheme.

But for pastors and other ministers who have always operated independently, are opt-outs of Social Security, and who buy no health or life insurance, I would recommend a simple study of Baptist history (if one identifies as a Baptist), and document your historical roots corresponding to the Amish, Mennonites, German Baptists, and other such off-shoots of their heritage. This may come in as very useful to them. This would also include many who do not use the “Baptist” name particularly, but who trace their heritage to the same historical roots.

Becoming Amish to resist the socialist objectives of our current federal government? It might be considered. However, it might not be necessary if you do some research.

Hmmm; I have the chin beard...

And a grandfather was born on the fringes of the Iowa Amish country, after his Pennsylvania-German daddy moved his family to newer coal fields...

You Englishers can do as ye see fit, but as for me and mine, we be Amish.

Computer using, phone talking, car driving, electromacuted Amish, maybe; but as far as mine Nuncle Samuel is concerned....

This is just payback for the last ten years of being singled out for extra security at the nation’s airports. Look for Swedish Grandmothers to get the same exemption soon.

Well, girls, I must be your uncle; I’m Joseph Stoltzfus.

Let’s all meet at Grandmother Stoltzfus’ house after Meeting next Sunday, for chicken dinner.

I am a conservative, and this faith in individual responsibility prevents me from believing in government control over my medical decisions. I expect an exemption for my beliefs.
