Ensign Tells Fellow Republicans to Back Off Reid
Fox News ^ | January 12, 2010 | AP

Posted on 01/12/2010 11:12:11 AM PST by Engineer_Soldier

Nevada Sen. John Ensign said Monday it is wrong for his fellow Republicans to call for the resignation of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid over racially insensitive comments he made about President Obama. Reid has apologized to Obama since a new book quoted him describing Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign as a light-skinned African-American "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." Ensign said Monday that Reid's apology was sincere and that the Nevada Democrat regretted how his comments were taken. "I think we need to get away from this politics of gotcha," Ensign told KKOH radio in Reno. "I don't think there's a person walking, certainly not a politician out there, that hasn't made comments they regret," he said. "When you make those comments, as long as you take responsibility for your comments and apologize for them, I think people should accept that." Ensign said he was angered by how Democrats treated former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., after he suggested the country might be better off if Strom Thurmond, who ran as a segregationist, would have won the presidency in 1948. Lott resigned shortly after he made the comments. "Democrats were really wrong in what they did to Trent Lott, and we shouldn't do the same thing to Sen. Reid," Ensign said.

Ensign's just another sell-out in the Republican Party. Thank God for the Tea Party and those who stand up for what's right.

You can always rely on a moron RINO to come to the rescue when you got the other side by the throat.

I think it's wrong for them to call for his resignation, too, but for different reasons. I want Dingy sitting up there in November as a nice, fat target for defeat. Fight on, Harry! Don't resign!

It has been well known for a long time in Nevada that Ensign is far, far too cozy with Reid. Not “far too cozy for a Republican...” but simply “far too cozy, period.”

I agree with Ensign. I don’t want Reid to resign his leadership position or his seat. He’s way too valuable to the GOP/conservative movement in those positions right now.

>> Ensign’s just another sell-out in the Republican Party.

It’s self-serving, in Ensign’s case. He’d rather that career pols not be examined too closely... many, like, him, are guilty of OTHER (sexual) indescretions.

As a lot, politicians are among the seamier groups in America.

John, John-—shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....Harry didn’t tell the Dems to lay off you about your affair. You’re going to need these Republicans you’re hushing for your re-election. Or do you think Harry will come riding to your rescue like you think you’re riding to his?

The only thing I’m worried about is him retiring his seat early. We want him wounded and angry when the matador comes out. If the picadors finish off the bull before the matador comes out everyone is disappointed.

Apparently, Mitch McConnel agrees with Mr. Ensign.

Just look at that face...would invoke fear and make any enemy shake in their boots. /sarcasm.

Hold on a second. May Ensign is right. Reid is severely wounded. Let's keep him that way. For Reid to drop out now would ensure the Democrats a more viable candidate in the fall. We want Harry Reid to stay in office and then clobber him in November.

If you disagree with me tell me why. I'd be interested in what's wrong with my analysis.

Oh by the way, I almost forgot. I don't like Ensign either.

It is far better to just keep your freaking pie hole shut than to defend those whose agenda is the destruction of traditional America and the traditional American family. Just keep your stinking mouth shut, Ensign.

Maybe for a different reason I think everyone should back off Reid. The Republicans were set to take the Dodd seat until he decided not to run. Now it looks like that seat is back in the Dem. column. Reid’s seat is set to go Rep. in November unless he chooses not to run and then it would be up for grabs. We need him to hang in there, so everyone should back off the racial thing.

Yeah, so Reid apologizes two years after the fact - only when his comments became public!

And his apology was really “sincere”

We are always expected to ignore ignorant Democrats, and maybe it makes sense when we stop to consider that most, if not all, Democrats are ignorant. Of course Reid is ignorant, and probably racist, but who in the Democratic Party could call him on it without being stupidly hypocritical? It’s not as easy for Democrats to go after fellow Democrats as it is for Republicans to go after Republicans. With Democrats, it’s always a matter of scum calling scum scum.

What a douchebag...

It’s not Reid, per se, that everyone’s going after -

it’s the DOUBLE STANDARD that we’re going after and exposing.

Ensign is in no position to bash Reid. The moment Ensign blasts Reid, the story will shift from Reid’s racism to Ensign’s adultery.

I actually agree with Ensign, not because I don’t think that Reid deserves the criticism, but because I think that defeating him at the polls would give us much more satisfaction than having him step down and then resigning from the campaign, as well.

Exactly! A lot of the posters here are reactionary. You seem to be a more strategic thinker. We want Harry Reid wounded but not killed off.
See my post at 11.
