US evangelical preacher Pat Robertson levied blame Wednesday for the devastating earthquake in Haiti on Haitians themselves, saying that the country "swore a pact to the devil" at its creation.
"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," Robertson said on his Christian Broadcasting Network show "The 700 Club." Haitians were originally "under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil," said the 80-year-old former presidential candidate.
"They said, we will serve you if you will get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal," the televangelist said.
"Ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other."

Yeah, and we’ve been cursed with Pat Robertson.
Good ol’ Pat does so little to improve the image of Christians. It is not the job of the Christian to judge, for crying out loud.
This has already been posted .... the thread is quite lengthy.
Got a link?
I’m sure this will now be leading the news headlines tomorrow.....Geeeeez........
Yeah . All that voodoo they doo.
I actually could believe this . Haiti does have very very bad karma
Not helped by the fact this dumb story has been posted at least 10 times from various sources on FR today.
Haiti practices a lot of voodoo and the place is so massively screwed up before the earthquake that Pat is probably onto something. Stii - it was an incredibly stupid thing for him to say.
I don’t know how to link, but the thread is entitled: ‘They Have Been Cursed: Pat Robertson Says Haiti Swore a Pact to the Devil (you should find it with a search, I would think!)
and they should be... Pat is a flippin’ IDIOT
Yes, even if he’s right, and he might very well be, it is not for him, or me for that matter, to say.
sounds reasonable to me, also
Haiti is a voodoo superpower but it all seems to boomerang back onto them. All that voodoo puts a curse over their island.
>> It is not the job of the Christian to judge
Huh? Read the complete sentence, please. Methinks a bit more research is necessary on your part.
I did a title search and none showed up. Maybe if you know what it was you could link it.
God has a long memory
“Vengeance is mine , saith the Lord”
That's for sure. Nobody else sucks wind in the Carribean like the Haitians do.
Dumbass. Why don't muslims ever take out a fatwa on useless people like Pat?
Not a big Pat R. fan, but can anyone tell me one thing he said that is not factual?
WWJD?
Would Christ condemn, or comfort? Even if Robertson’s notion is correct, I don’t believe for a second Christ would’ve said that at this particular time.
How does that statement reflect on Christ and His followers? How will it come off to someone who just lost a child, or a parent? Robertson has lost his way.

Maybe, probably; whatever; but you can pull the truth here. One only has to wonder or challenge the MO of Haiti; when the other half of this island - with same resources/landscape. . .ocean view, is doing well.
Corruption/drugs/voodoo so embedded here; and all aided and abetted by USA; while the elite political class enjoys the riches of our gifts. How much have we given here? And for what and for whom? The non-political class of Haitians? Nooooo!
Personally, the fact that the palace was taken out; seems a poetic justice; and maybe as well; the UN. That said; am, in fact sorry for the pain and suffering of all those who have little or no say in determining Haiti's present or future; and those 'innocent'. So much for 'change' that no one in this pathetic country can believe in; thanks to the corruption of more than a few. Haitians and non-Haitians.
May Pat Robertson be forced to live with Obama when they’re both experiencing massive “afterlife warming”.
Callous and Crazy.
Why would Pat Robertson assign this to all the people of Haiti? Maybe the pact was made by only a few without the knowledge or approval of the righteous. Many, many innocent people were killed and many more are suffering.
I think that it is judgmental and foolish to suggest that so many innocent people are receiving a just punishment. Shame on you Pat Robertson! Judge not, lest you be judged!
Jesus was a carpenter and a house builder; He built His house on a rock.
Haiti is cursed by many things, including a faith that incorporates elements outside of Christianity. Like the Irish in America, we can start rebuilding Haiti by sending Catholic missionaries to teach them their faith.
Note: I’m Lutheran
Hey Pat - stupid is as stupid does. You’re not helping the conservative cause with this BS. But, you’re providing people like Olberfurher with plenty of fodder to hammer conservatives with.
The circumstantial evidence is on Robertsons side.
Two concepts; not exactly irreconcilable. . .
I love it whenever Pat Robertson says something controversial (simple truth that the unclean and faithless cannot by their very nature comprehend) and all of the anti-Christian bigots come crawling out from their rat holes. Google Pat Robertsons charity Operation Blessing. It is one of the most effective and ethically run charities on earth. Fact. Here are the facts. Everywhere on earth at this very moment where Christianity is illegal you will also find the most unspeakable and horrific human rights violations. It is also a fact that the MOST of the worlds charity comes from nations where there is a Christian majority. YOU JUST CANT KEEP ANTI-CHRISTER HATERS FROM HATING.
You disgust me.
I think he was asking for provable facts.
All I know about Haiti is that it’s poor almost beyond words, while the Dominican Republic isn’t. And, I remember the boat people off Florida. And AIDS. I remember Haiti’s association with AIDS. Here’s an example:
“AIDS Virus Traveled to Haiti, Then U.S., Study Says”
Amitabh Avasthi for National Geographic News
October 29, 2007
HIV went directly from Africa to Haiti, then spread to the United States and much of the rest of the world beginning around 1969, suggests an international team of researchers.

‘Seems to me he’s been saying similar stuff about every earthquake for awhile now. What was it here in LA in 94? That God had lifted his hand of protection, or something?
It’s physics, Pat. That’s the way God made it.
I’m not entirely sure why Christ’s occupation is relevant.
Nonetheless, I don’t believe for a second that Christ would’ve given a grief-stricken Haiti the Christian equivalent of “you had it coming.”
Haitians can be converted only by displays of Christ’s love in this trying time. Robertson’s combination of arrogance and kicking Haitians when they’re down is unbecoming, obnoxious, and besmirtches the Christian label he claims as his own.

Maybe the French have something to do with it....
There may be some truth to this. It appears those who practice voodoo and withcraft bring the curses they sent out down on their own heads. It’s terrible that the innocent must suffer right along with the guilty.
monkey crack or goofballs?
This is why the “right” gets a bad name ... I’m a Christian, but this is a STUPID and NOT NECESSARY COMMENT! What a jerk.
Lots of people died and the first thing he does is preach.
Well maybe the second. I certainly hope that he is concerned and wishes the people the best.
These same ‘Christians’ will say the same thing to a
fellow Christian whose father or son dies— if they think
he wasn’t right with the Lord.
They hurt people and Christian work horribly with these
kind of statements.
No one knows really why God allows certain things to happen, nor does anyone know why Pat was born in America,
while others his age were born in Haiti to those parents
who he says made a pack with the devil.
This attitude of superiority is really disgusting to me,
they should practice some humbleness and meakness, but I
doubt they would apply that themselves, only others—such
is their work.
Christians are to judge justly (St. John 7.24), with a measure of judgement that they would apply to themselves (St. Matthew 7.1-2). A Christian man indwelled by the holy Ghost can judge all things (1 Corinthians 2.15).
"In any way that men love me in that same way they find my love: for many are the paths of men, but they all in the end come to me." (Bhagavad-Gita 4:11)
I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. (John 10:16)
"...once we accept religion, then we must follow it very sincerely, very genuinely. Through that way, the different religious traditions can promote, can achieve harmony." (His Holiness the Dalai Lama, July 2, 2000)
(Just sayin'...)

The Bois-Caiman Ceremony was held by Boukman in Haiti
Dutty Boukman held a Vodou ceremony in Bois-Caïman, where hundreds of slaves vowed to die for liberty.
Dutty Boukman was a houngan, or vodoun priest whose death was considered a catalyst to the slave uprising that marked the beginning of the Haïtian Revolution.
Boukman prophesied in the Bois Caiman Ceremony that the slaves Jean François, Biassou, and Jeannot would be leaders of a slave revolt that would free the slaves of Saint-Domingue.
Haitians honored Boukman by admitting him into the pantheon of loa (Vodou spirits).
