Officials: Pentagon report faults Hasan's bosses (8 face disciplinary action)
Belleville News Democrat ^ | 1/14/2010 | Anne Gearan

As many as eight Army officers could face discipline for failing to do anything when the alleged shooter in the Fort Hood rampage displayed erratic behavior early in his military career, two officials familiar with the case said.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates was expected to refer findings on the officers to the Army for further inquiry and possible punishment. The report on what went wrong in the case of Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, who is accused in the shootings that killed 13 people at the Texas Army base on Nov. 5, is expected to be released Friday.

Several midlevel officers overlooked or failed to act on red flags in Hasan's lax work habits and fixation on religion, the officials said Thursday. Hasan was an odd duck and a loner who was passed along from office to office and job to job despite professional failings that included missed or failed exams and physical fitness requirements, the review found.

An official familiar with both documents detailed their findings on condition of anonymity because the larger unclassified report has not yet been released, and the one dealing with Hasan in detail will not be publicly released.

Earlier, another official familiar with the findings said the five- to eight officers who could face discipline were supervisors who knew about Hasan's shortcomings and looked the other way or who did not fully reflect concerns about Hasan in professional evaluations.

The officers supervised Hasan when he was a medical student and during his early work as an Army psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

So I guess they've found their scapegoats.

Before you flame, consider this: mid-level officers who ignored this did wrong, no doubt. But are they any more guilty than the flag officers, SES's, and political appointees who established the politically correct atmosphere that has hampered the military's effectiveness for years? Yet the latter group will, without a doubt, not face ANY retribution.

These are probably the officers who sent the warning messages to the Pentagon about Hasan. I would not doubt.

CYA Maneuvers.

You're likely quite right.

Don't tell us there isn't a "political" coverup. We're not stupid.

So now we're gonna go to jail because we engage in PC???

Mr. Obama....You first!!

This is pure Barbara Streisand!!

Here is what the politicians did..

DO NOT profile...
DO NOT preach in Jesus Name but STAY CLEAR of the Muslims and let them do what they want...
YOU MUST honor and respect Muslims even when they act suspicious...

Then...
WHAT? He killed people...well you are obviously to blame...you must suffer for our pathetic liberal worldview. Tag...you're the scapegoat!

Seems to me it does give a go-ahead, in the future, for officers to report this sort of thing without fear of retribution? Or is that pie-in-the-sky?

Exactly so!!! Remember the stupid comment by the army’s top general after the Ft. Hood terrorist incident? I, too, suspect that the army was flooded by a pervading PC mentality vis a vis muslims just as they have since the mid 70s in reference to females in the army.

There is an up side. First, if any of the whistle blowers are named, the stench will be all over the nets to the point that the show trials will be a prosecution of the prosecutors. And, second, punishing this PC inaction will inoculate those who find themselves in need of “bypassing the chain of command” to expose their PC bosses.

Liberalism is a series of unintended consequences. It only requires someone with a willingness to exploit them. If you doubt me, just take note of the underlying incident.

This sounds like there were good reasons to stop his advancement that had nothing to do with his Islamic ravings, and therefore would not have left them open to PC criticism had they held him to the standards to which they supposedly hold everyone.

No doubt these officers had “diversity” and “tolerance” pounded into their skulls. They got the message. Now they will pay the price for the policies established by others.

I’d even bet that in several of those training sessions post 9/11 that a “vocal Muslim” was used in a case study to show them how to properly behave.

Au contraire! Can’t do that as you’d get in trouble for picking on a muzzie. If any branch of the military wants a particular program to pass, it will pass regardless of the end result. Remember the female carrier pilot incident? When I was in the army a new program of putting women in the field with a field unit was tried. It was an abject failure. The army called it a success.

I think the political correctness that led to, if not actually caused, this massacre has long been official and thus mandated policy. The makers of that policy deserve a year or so in the stockade to contemplate their sins.

It's long past time that pentagon suits and gold braid bureaucrats paid a heavy personal price for their dysfunctional and fuzzy social engineering and were reminded of the primary mission of America's military. To punish the mid-level officers and NCO's who dutifully obeyed orders and implimented that wrong headed policy compounds the problem. Don't publish the soldier for following orders; punish the people up the chain who gave the orders.

I disagree with you.

This is a positive move compared to the DOJ’s refusal to investigate the black panther incident.

Where does the buck stop on this one? He was promoted to Major in March of 2009 and Obama was Commander in Chief at that time. The Bush admin has some responsibility but Bush isn't CIC now.

Going ever further just who and how did this mess descend on the US military, and who by name in the military or in government was the instigator. My sense is, the issue of women in the military is where it began which preceded the homosexual issue or was close enough to it to be concurrent issues. The early eighties as I recall, which coincided with the first female Military Academy graduates.

Why is the base commander not being brought up on charges? He left his troops defenceless. He should have painted bullseye targets on their uniforms since he didn’t allow them to defend themselves.

A base full of Army troops and the only people defending the base were the MP’s.That’s a recipie for disaster.

You're exactly right. It was the senior officers who set the tone, who made mid-level officers adhere to PC.
