Haiti earthquake: President Preval says country like a war zone
The Telegraph ^ | January 16, 2010

Posted on 01/16/2010 7:02:31 AM PST by myknowledge

Haitian President Rene Preval said: "The damage I have seen here can be compared to the damage you would see if the country was bombed for 15 days. It is like in a war."

The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that devastated much of the hilly coastal city on Tuesday also collapsed the elegant presidential palace and his own home.

Authorities in Haiti, already the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, are saying they believe the death toll will be between 100,000 and 200,000 and that three-quarters of the city will need to be rebuilt.

P.S.

As you can see, Haitians do not have $200,000 to apply for residency. Tourist visas are only for 30 days. I don’t believe there is anything like a “retired” Haitian today.

When were you in Haiti?

When were you ever an observant member of the human race?

Answer?

Oh, that's right. You're a Mango Tree Lawyer (whatever the hell that is...)

The average Haitian doesn’t have $.05, let alone $.55. And the treasury doesn’t have great sums either.
The money must be leaving the country.

Your rambling tells me you have never been to Haiti and haven’t a clue, and yet you ramble on as a know it all.

I have been there several times.

Your grade is “F.”

Your rambling tells me you have never been to Haiti and haven’t a clue, and yet you ramble on as a know it all.

I have been there several times.

And I've been to the Far East and Europe dozens of times (and spent over half a decade of my life living between them), yet I would never be so arrogant as to lump all the people of one nation into a single category, as you have.

You're an ignorant bigot and a fool of the first order.

Well, the U.S. and Canada are leading the humanitarian effort. France has its own part to play with helping one of its former colonies through the MSF (Doctors Without Borders) and the French military.

You’re right of course—while I was pointing out that technically Haiti was a “Western” nation, neither the government nor the citizens fit that description, hence their failures.

Hong Kong and Singapore would be examples of “non-Western” nations who owed their success to actually functioning as Western-type nations.

So...we finally hear from this guy Preval, 7 days after the quake.

Man, he’s as swift as Obama.

This thread is so offensive, with all the ignorant racial stereotyping. I don’t believe most of these folks have ever met a Haitian in their whole life.

Fifty years ago in NYC I worked with Haitians in the banking industry. They were intelligent, well-educated, religious, and hardworking. Their descendents are even moreso.

These idiots who write such ignorant posts should just GOOGLE “Famous Haitian-Americans”.
