"I can't see Russia from here like Gov. Palin, but I can see South Dakota and South Dakota has figured it out - zero percent sells."

Those words came from Iowa GOP Gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats during a forum sponsored by the Clay County Tea Party Patriots.

Vander Plaats is making his third attempt at becoming Iowa's Governor. He is a very close ally of Mike Huckabee, and served as Huckabee's 2008 Iowa co-chair.

empt at the Iowa Governor's office, the Sioux City businessman's appearance highlighted the first of three scheduled gubernatorial Informed Voter Forums sponsored by the Clay County Tea Party Patriots.

BVP is the best shot of getting Iowa a conservative governor. But first he has to beat a "moderate" former governor in the primary and then the sitting governor in the general.

And "conservatives" here on FR are attacking him over a one-liner advocating lower taxes?

Who's the "idiot", again?

This was not a attack on Palin...She said what she said, and he was name dropping for the tea party folks. How you and others on this thread can morph this into a personal attack and demand apologies shows just how far gone this forum has become.

Sorry, but you got it wrong. Sarah Palin did NOT say that and the fabricated remark is used derisively by primarily the left. If the fool was trying to name drop, perhaps he could have chosen a little better than to repeat a slam you might hear on MSNBC or CNN.

That isn't being thin-skinned, it is not accepting the Left's terminology and not suffering fools gladly. Bad enough if he wasn't mentally nimble enough to choose a better remark on the fly but inexcusable if it was written for him that way.

I dunno what world you live in but she said that "You can see Russia from Alaska.

Later on, a comedy skit portrayed her as adding the words "my home".

Both are true but the left took it to mean her home town which is untrue.

The fact is that on a good day you can see Russian territory from Alaskan territory, and the whole controversy is ridiculous.

Now what was it you were saying?

Read the other posts that clearly document what was said, when and by whom. Sarah and Tina.

It is like "Mission Accomplished" in reference to Bush. It makes no difference the original context or intent, it is now universally recognized as a slam against him. If Bill Clinton said that to him at the end of their recent conference, everyone would see it as a back-stab.

Saying "can see" was a very poor choice on the part of the candidate and quite frankly this is the time to be weeding out the weak sisters. We can choose to hold our noses and rally around the best candidate AFTER the primary.

If you don't think "I can see Russia" is used as a derisive remark aimed at Sarah, then I can only shake my head in your general direction.

Hope that helps, and more to the point, any remark made by a left against a conservative is done deride because they think we are stupid.

There is nothing wrong with what she said....

The Iowa politician did not know that there was even a controversy. This is all inside baseball within the conservative and lefty communities. He thought it was a good lead in way to mention her name and meant nothing by it.

The only idiots offended were on this thread and for no reason at all. And it's not the first time I've seen this nonsense. It looks just like this at DU. It ain't good.

Why exactly do you call Bob Vander Plaats a RINO?

Well, I thought my post made it clear...but maybe I need to simply it a bit further:

Why did I call him a RINO?

1) He took a cheap shot at Governor Palin, and;
2) Because, I wanted to.

Hope that answers your question...

Why does Iowa always come up with assholes like this guy to run for gubner?

Something about pigs and cornfields that encourages stupidity?

The Iowa politician did not know that there was even a controversy.

He should have. It is common knowledge.

This is all inside baseball within the conservative and lefty communities.

No, it really it not. Saturday Night Live is not political "inside baseball."

Palin's actual "see Russia" remark was uncontroversial and passed unnoticed by the public. Saturday Night Live made it controversial and famous by changing Palin's words to make her sound like an idiot.

For Vander Plaats to reference the quote is to reopen that wound. Either he intended to insult Palin, or this was a gaffe.

But no........he was really insulting her???? He said "I can't see Russia but I can see S. Dakota." Now he should just go away! LOL....I give up...

Yeah that works for me.....LOL! .

I feel a bit sorry for Bob, who isn't a bad guy by any stretch of the imagination. Unfortunately, he blunders now and then, and this was one of those times. Maybe if he'd delivered it differently, or prefaced it with "The left likes to pretend that Sarah Palin said..." or something, but he didn't. Probably best for his supporters and GOP detractors to simply move on.

Having said that, there is understandable nostalgia here for Terry Branstad, even among people who didn't much care for him a decade ago. And why not? Hell, Tom Vilsack wiped out Branstad's budget surplus with one teacher-fellating stroke of the pen, and it has been downhill ever since; when Chet Culver was elected, the bottom of the barrel had been uncovered, but since that point the state has broken through and started digging into the floor.

I said it some time back and I'll say it again: Vilsack made Branstad look like Abraham Lincoln, and Culver has managed to make him look like a Lincoln/Washington tag team.

You know this really burns me. The guy is a cretin.

How so?

Anyone who [thinks] they can make some joke about this had better NEVER make it to my face! It will be his last!

What is so sacred about it that makes it off limits for humor?
