Dems Weigh Other Options for Passing Health Care if GOP Wins Kennedy's Seat [Nuclear Option Open]

January 16, 2010 Dems Weigh Other Options for Passing Health Care if GOP Wins Kennedy's Seat

Chris Van Hollen, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told Bloomberg this week that Democrats are still considering reconciliation, a tactic that forbids filibusters and allow bills to pass with just 51 votes, or a simple majority.

Democrats on Capitol Hill are dusting off the so-called "nuclear option," the latest sign that their health care push could be derailed by a Republican win in Tuesday's surprisingly competitive special election for Massachusetts senator.

The procedural move known as reconciliation, called the "nuclear option" because it would shut down a GOP filibuster, has been discussed by Democrats since last year as a last resort to pass health care reform legislation intended to lower health costs and cover millions of uninsured Americans. President Obama has made it his domestic policy priority.

Democrats hold a commanding majority in the House, and in the Senate, their 60 votes are enough to avoid a filibuster. But the balance could change if Republican Scott Brown beats Democrat Martha Coakley on Tuesday to win the late Ted Kennedy's former Senate seat.

If Republicans win, Obama and Democratic congressional leaders would have a political window of perhaps days if they were to try ramming a final bill through the Senate -- at considerable risk of incurring public wrath. All 40 Republicans are opposed to the legislation out of concern that it costs too much and increases the government's role in the health care industry.

Reconciliation carries a lot of conditions...Not sure they’re gonna be able to do it.

Okay, another purity test for Conservative and GOP candidates. Will you cross the aisle and vote with Democrats to keep reconciliation from taking place later? After 2010 or when you have a majority? We all remember the Gang of 14 and those thast stood against domestic drilling who could not jump across the aisle fast enough to show “bi-partisanship.”

I am all for “bi-partisanship.” Democrats are more than welcome to vote with us anytime they want!

If Brown wins in Mass (I still think it’s unlikely) and the Dems keep pursuing Health Care, they are truly suicidal (politically speaking). But they will have achieved their goal. Nationalised health care will be a reality and there will be no going back.

Absolutely unbelievable!!! The will of the people are saying HELL NO so they try to shove it up our a@@ anyway they can??

They have something, or know something we don’t. Something is going on. For them to be this OBVIOUS, I just don’t know what to make of it.

Except that the “something” is not so good for us.

"Once they get this they can control everything in our daily lives."

I think they're pushing us, on purpose. Perhaps that is what this is all about......martial law.

Why not also have non-leftist federal judges declare ALL of this socialistic crap as unconstitutional, after Obama does officially sign off on all of it?

Guess these Dems can't remember what MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) means from the Cold War era. If they try to pull this stunt they will find out very quickly what MAD means ....

Just sayin'

But a spokesman for the Secretary of the Commonwealth's Office said the winner could head to Washington as soon as early February.

Excuse me! "as early as"

Is he not the senator, in the case of such elections, the very next day!

I hope he goes straight to DC. to the Senate with GOP leader and lawyers and FOX news and demands to be seated.

I pray Brown wins and that his win is the nail in the obama discrimination health care bill’s coffin.

Isn’t that what Hitler did? The only difference I see is that the German people had nothing to fight for...”nothing left to lose”.

We, as Americans, have EVERYTHING to lose. God help us if this happens. It will be the bloodiest war upon our soil.

It will have to be FOX news because we all know that the state-run media will give in-depth reports regarding all of the reasons and/or options available to the State of Massachusetts to preclude Scott Brown from taking the seat immediately. We know this will be coming should the R win this election. Of course, should Coakley win, Reid will demand she be seated immediately!
