Scientists using selective temperature data, skeptics say

Call it the mystery of the missing thermometers.

Two months after "climategate" cast doubt on some of the science behind global warming, new questions are being raised about the reliability of a key temperature database, used by the United Nations and climate change scientists as proof of recent planetary warming.

Two American researchers allege that U.S. government scientists have skewed global temperature trends by ignoring readings from thousands of local weather stations around the world, particularly those in colder altitudes and more northerly latitudes, such as Canada.

In the 1970s, nearly 600 Canadian weather stations fed surface temperature readings into a global database assembled by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Today, NOAA only collects data from 35 stations across Canada.

Worse, only one station -- at Eureka on Ellesmere Island -- is now used by NOAA as a temperature gauge for all Canadian territory above the Arctic Circle.

The Canadian government, meanwhile, operates 1,400 surface weather stations across the country, and more than 100 above the Arctic Circle, according to Environment Canada.

Yet as American researchers Joseph D'Aleo, a meteorologist, and E. Michael Smith, a computer programmer, point out in a study published on the website of the Science and Public Policy Institute, NOAA uses "just one thermometer [for measuring] everything north of latitude 65 degrees."

Both the authors, and the institute, are well-known in climate-change circles for their skepticism about the threat of global warming.

Mr. D'Aleo and Mr. Smith say NOAA and another U.S. agency, the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) have not only reduced the total number of Canadian weather stations in the database, but have "cherry picked" the ones that remain by choosing sites in relatively warmer places, ...

From the article:
They say NOAA collects no temperature data at all from Bolivia -- a high-altitude, landlocked country -- but instead "interpolates" or assigns temperature values for that country based on data from "nearby" temperature stations located at lower elevations in Peru, or in the Amazon basin.

The result, they say, is a warmer-than-truthful global temperature record.

"NOAA . . . systematically eliminated 75% of the world's stations with a clear bias towards removing higher latitude, high altitude and rural locations, all of which had a tendency to be cooler," the authors say. "The thermometers in a sense, marched towards the tropics, the sea, and to airport tarmacs."

The NOAA database forms the basis of the influential climate modelling work, and the dire, periodic warnings on climate change, issued by James Hanson, the director of the GISS in New York

Can’t change their minds, but it’s sure fun to annoy them with facts.

D'Aleo characterized the NOAA/GISS database's quality as, "Non Gradus Anus Rodentum"...

(If you don't read Latin, you can Google the term.)

I have been harping on this travesty for several years now. It is nice that finally people are not accusing me of wearing a tin foil hat. It is maddening that despite irrefutable evidence of deceitful behavior by proponents nothing has happened to these criminals. Billions of dollars have already been wasted and crops have been diverted into alcohol production causing food shortages in developing nations.

Thanx !

John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, aired a one hour special over KUSI-TV, San Diego, California, on January 14, 2010, "Global Warming: The Other Side", which went into some detail about these agencies of the U.S. government and their fraudulent temperature data in Segment 4 (of 5), interviewing Joseph D'Aleo and E. Michael Smith

Maybe these “scientists” missed their calling. It is apparent to all that they should be pitching sham-wows.

When they’re not cherry picking or editing data to fit the assumption, they’re just flat out making it up.

It is not only Canada we have to be concerned with but some fifteen thousands or so stations located across Asia that have been reported to no longer be active as reported in a number of different reports via. climatedepot and elsewhere.
The coldest areas have been negated. And as we now understand a lot of NASA produced data has been tampered with or simply ignored.
The global hoax continues to grow in dimension. This is a global crime. Not just any one nation's crime.
IHMO. The whole global warming movement world wide had better be shown by the more honest press and governments as a criminal offense. A new dimension must now start. The criminal prosecutions of all involved. Spare none. None where of a Neanderthal level. All understood what they participated in.
For years there have been honest scientist that have questioned what the hell was going on. For those, a big thanks. For all the politicians and quite dishonest and in many cases clowns that pretend to be solid non political oriented scientist... go to jail... go directly to jail... do not be given the chance to make amends. We don't need you. Let this whole affair in criminal study be a lesson to those that claim they represent the halls of scientific endeavor.
Stick to real science.

Maybe the Oil-For-Food prosecutors, who did such a marvelous* job, can be empowered to handle this mess, too.

They could also have included the exposé that Anthony Watts did about the placement of the temperature sensors by NOAA in locations which were guaranteed to give faulty higher readings.

It's falling apart for alarmist liars... It's all falling apart for them.
