US firm backs off on 'Bible' scopes

US firm sought to quiet a controversy over coded Biblical references inscribed on gunsights used by US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan Thursday, announcing it was providing the military with kits to remove them. Muslim and religious freedom groups have reacted angrily after it emerged that Trijicon has contracts to supply over 800,000 of the gunsights to the US military.

Critics charged that the company was putting US troops in danger in Muslim-majority nations where the US military presence is already bitterly resented.

The Wixom, Michigan company said it has inscribed references to the New Testament on the metal casings of its gunsights for over two decades.

But it said it would supply the military with 100 kits "to enable the removal of the references that are already on products that are currently deployed."

Among the coded inscriptions were JN8:12, an apparent reference to John 8:12: "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

The company currently has a multi-year, 660-million-dollar contract with the US Marine Corps and other contracts with the US Army to supply the scopes.

Just under 300,000 of the gunsights are currently fielded, 220,000 by the marines and between 70,000 and 75,000 by the army, a Pentagon official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Trijicon said it had taken the step "in response to concerns raised by the Department of Defense" and to "ensure the war-time production needs of the troops are met as quickly as possible."

I agree. I saw nothing wrong with having these “codes” on them.

This report is only MOSTLY true:

The DOD raised concerns after loud objections were raised by Michael Weinstein, president of the "Military Religious Freedom Foundation".

Of course, I do believe that the inscriptions might have been imprudent..

But I thought Muslims have the utmost respect for the Bible and the "People of the Book".

That's the great thing about Islam and it's teachings...they mean whatever works for the moment...just like Liberalism.

Critics charged that the company was putting US troops in danger...

Somehow the inscription "JN8:12" is dangerous to troops, but this isn't:

Maybe we should stop sending US money to foreign countries, since it has “In God We Trust” written on it.

As I said on another thread: I don’t know what’s worse; the godless Libtards who made a big deal over this, or the gutless Christians at Trijicon who gave up without a fight...

Cheers

I suppose they'll have to remove part of the inscription.

Michael Weinstein is an anti military, leftist, shrew, that looks for any way that he can cause trouble for the military, he concentrates on anything related to God or religion.

Michael Weinstein is a USAF JAG puke who —get ready— did work for Ronaldus Maximus, then worked for Perot, and since 2006 has been waging jihad for Secular Fundamentalism against Evangelicals (full disclosure —I am not an evangelical).

I think it’s FINE he’s Jewish —I’m tickled he worked for Ronny, but...has he lost SITE of who is the real enemy here...?

JUST WOW.

HE is verrrry proud of this attack on Trijicon & Christianity, and at his website clips of news report of his attacks are front and center —he really believes this stuff.

"Muslim and religious freedom groups have reacted angrily..."

That is Newspeak for "religious-intolerance" groups.

Fine. Just paint “Allahu Ahkbar” on the nose of a nuke and drop it on those ROPers.
