McChrystal focuses on peace with Taliban: report

LONDON — The NATO commander in Afghanistan said his troop surge could lead to a negotiated peace with the Taliban, in an interview published Monday ahead of a major conference this week on the war.

US General Stanley McChrystal also told the Financial Times he hopes his allies will leave Thursday's meeting in London with a "renewed commitment" to the increasingly bloody conflict.

By using the 30,000-strong surge in US troops to secure territory stretching from the Taliban's southern heartlands to Kabul, the general said he aims to weaken the insurgency so much its leaders would accept a political settlement.

"As a soldier, my personal feeling is that there's been enough fighting," said McChrystal.

"I believe that a political solution to all conflicts is the inevitable outcome. And it's the right outcome," he added.

Asked is he would be content to see Taliban leaders in a future government in the country, the general said: "I think any Afghans can play a role if they focus on the future, and not the past."

Guess who's also dealing with the Afghan heroin?

The CIA. They have their own devious agenda for the heroin.

Want to see something funny? Go to the Drudge Report and look at the picture of Bin Laden (it's upside down for some reason but that isn't what I find funny) now look in the left hand column of Brad Pitt. He is trying to look like Bin Laden. LOL

the only ‘peace’ we should offer to the Taliban is ‘rest in peace’ via .50 cal sniper rifle rounds .

Most people who have never been to Stan, don’t understand this reality.

And people who have never come closer to combat than a game of Call of Duty never will understand, I fear you're wasting your time.

There’s always a difference between the hardcore and the followers. But the only way you can set the followers free is by defeating the hardcore, and it doesn’t sound as if we have any intention of doing that.

To me, reading this, it sounds like we are simply going to ask for an end of overt attacks and then hand it over to the hardcore, which can go back to intimidating the followers and building its strength.

Obama is indeed protecting the Taliban. He sees them as third-world Muslim freedom fighters getting back at the evil West, not as the vicious, oppressive fanatics that they are.

I feel for the Afghanis, particularly the Afghan women and girls whom we had (briefly) set free. I guess they don’t really count for much. Bomb their schools and send them back to the control of the religious police.

Well, I’m no soldier but this seems like a strange comment. Watching thread for enlightenment from those who serve/d.

I didn’t have the health to serve, but I know exactly what veterans are thinking. You do too. The red stripes of our flag are being defiled. The blood was shed for what? The one good thing that came out of 9-11, a mobilization against international terror, is flushed.

There is a difference between part-time/bought Taliban and hardcore Taliban.....Gen. McChrystal knows the difference.....that I’m sure of. Most people who have never been to Stan, don’t understand this reality.

Can anyone imagine General Omar Bradley, or General George Patton, just to name two of our greatest military geniuses, suggesting in late 1944 that it was ‘time to discuss peace with the Nazi Party leadership, and work on plans to bring them into a new German government’?

This is no way to fight a war.

Oh wait, that dumb ass in the White House doesn’t think we’re IN a war.

Can’t put myself in the general’s boots. Still...”enough fighting,” you would think, is when the enemy is dead, defeated, or at the very least surrendering.

Leno summed it up....

Today officially marks the beginning of President Obama’s second year in office. He has three years left, but NBC offered him $45 million to leave altogether.

To paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill, “an empty limousine pulled up in front of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and Barack 0bama got out.”
