Women's Studies, R.I.P.
National Post ^ | January 25, 2010 | Kathryn Blaze Carlson

On a clear day last Nove mber, mourners gathered at Guelph University's Branion Plaza to honour the death of a beloved: the school's Women's Studies program.

Heads lowered and dressed in black, dozens of students and faculty tipped their eyes to tombstones that read 'R. I. P, Feminism' and converged around a casket that symbolically hosted the ill-fated discipline.

It was the eve of the program's 30th birthday, and the funeral was a dual image of both life and death: Life, in that more than 100 Women's Studies devotees staged the ceremony to showcase support for the program, and death, in that the discipline had been deemed unworthy of a future at the university.

Just as Guelph University announced it was axing the program altogether -- a move the Canadian Women's Studies Association called "draconian," and which "signals the resurgence of a chilly climate for critical discourse of all kinds in Canada" -- other universities rebranded their Women's Studies program as some combination of Women's, Gender, Sexuality and Social Justice Studies.

....

"Most have left 'women' in the title to recognize the history of the discipline, and added 'gender' to mark a shift in the field to include new and different questions," said Annalee Lepp, executive member of the Canadian Women's Studies Association and chairwoman of the Women's Studies Department at the University of Victoria, where she said renaming is up for discussion.

Unfortunately, this is not the end of these worse than useless women's studies programs, but their mutation into the general promotion of all manner of sexual deviancy.

At first reading, I thought this was a good thing, but it looks as though this foolish and useless course has just mutated into something even WORSE.

...it was always a wrong headed idea to have women’s studies offered...girls actually took out student loans for that...to their sorrow later....or as the old song goes:

“I got a degree in Women’s Studies, how come I can’t pay the rent?”

‘feminist’s in my opinion contributed more to the break down of the cultural and moral standards of our society than any other entity.

I am all for women pursuing a profession, career, etc. But abandonment of family (children) and adopting perceived male sexual mores....was a major death knell to the values that promote decency in civilization. The anger promoted towards men was a destructive sickness.

A women’s studies major is a resume stain.

RIP?

Rot in hell is more like it.

How much damage was caused to the study of literature and the respect rightfully due to men and boys because of these leftist/communist agitators masquerading as women-rights advocates we will never be able to total. But it has been enormous.

...and how much has the existence of this, and other specious "social studies" departments, contributed to the out-of-control tuition increases that make college increasingly unaffordable?

“women’s studies” programs, “white racism” programs are a waste of time, and are one reason why a university degree is worth as much as a high school diploma was 50 years ago.

One of my best friends who I’ve known for years has a daughter. A very intelligent girl who taught herself to read at the age of 4. When she was in college, my friend was telling me how she was going to be graduating a year early with two majors.

I asked “In what fields?”

He replied “Sociology and Women’s Studies”.

Without thinking, I said “Oh, couldn’t she have found a real major.” Of course, as soon as I said it, I realized that I probably should have just said, “That’s nice”.

Anyway, my friend let out a sigh and said “I know”

If I was the President of a university, I would require my college catelog to have an asterisk next to each useless program in my university. It would have a disclaimer that said, “If you pursue this course of study, it is highly unlikely that you will ever be hired for a job based off the course work you do at this institution.”

My school's (Va Tech) motto is “Ut Prosim;” That I may Serve/That I may be useful. The motto was reflective of the general purpose behind a university education everywhere up to the mid-twentieth century.

Just what does a degree in Black/Women's/Chicano/etc Studies prepare a graduate to do?
Only to be a Professional Malcontent!

Not exactly a service to society!

any program with studies in the title isn't worth studying, like any program with science in the title isn't science...

They already have that disclaimer but it applies to the entire catalog. Just use the words “implied warranty of merchantability” and watch the administration blanche.

All majors that end in Studies should be eliminated and the faculty fired. Then they could go to work for Acorn for money instead of using the University.
