‘Chemical’ Ali Executed in Iraq

A well-known face of the former government of Saddam Hussein widely known as Chemical Ali was executed Monday for ordering a gas attack on a Kurdish village in northern Iraq and for his role in other attacks that became notorious symbols of Mr. Hussein’s tenure.

An Iraqi court had sentenced the man, Ali Hassan al-Majid, to death by hanging last week. He is known here as Chemical Ali because of the attack on the village of Halabja, in which more than 5,000 Kurds died.

“I congratulate the Iraqi people for this sentence,” said a lawmaker, Safia Suhail.

It was Mr. Majid’s eighth sentence of death by hanging since 2007, when he received five death sentences for his involvement in the military campaign known as Anfal against Iraqi Kurds.

The delays in executing Mr. Majid came in contrast to the speed with which Mr. Hussein’s death sentence was carried out. Mr. Hussein was sentenced Nov. 5, 2006; his appeal was rejected on Dec. 26 that year; and he went to the gallows just before dawn within four days.

He should fit right in - I’ve heard that Arabic is very commonly spoken there.

Seems to me the Iraqi’s got it right. What’s our problem?

The criminal justice system sure works fast in Iraq now.I just hope they didn’t learn all of the legal tricks American defence lawyers play to get their convicted murderers off of death row.

Our justice system needs to become just as efficient.

I hope the hangman did a better job than they did last time. Not that it mattered, but they dam near jerked the head right off of Saddam.

I’ll never forget that folks on here were saying they slit his throat. I told them it was not that they slit his throat but misjudged the fall and the result was it dam near jerked his head off.

Hanging is an art of sorts...you gotta get the hang of it.

Funny, I've always wondered whether they hanged him at all. One shaky, blurry cell phone video is hardly convincing, and after the drop there's no clarity at all. In fact, for something of this importance it's highly suspect that no other video or evidence was produced. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if he's actually in Argentina.

I guess the EIGHTH time is a charm.
