USA takes in 6,000 Somali from Uganda

THE American government is to resettle 5,800 refugees from Nakivale refugee camp in Isingiro district to the United States, Prosy Katura, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) protection officer, has revealed.

Katura said a team has already been sent to Nakivale to scrutinise the refugees to ensure they have no links with al-Qaeda, an extremist group. The American taskforce at the camp will also study files of individual refugees since they arrived in Uganda.

During a meeting with the Germany ambassador to Uganda, Reinhard Buchholz, who visited the camp on Friday, Katura said the exercise under the “expedited Somali resettlement programme” should be completed by September. “We have so far scrutinised about 2,000 Somalis out of 5,800 who are living in Nakivale.”

Explaining the reason of resettling Somalis to the US, Katura said Somali refugees have failed to integrate with other refugee groups living in Nakivale and with the local communities because of their unique language and culture.

She added that the group cannot go back to Somalia since the country is still unstable and they fear to be killed and persecuted. Nakivale has about 470,000 refugees from Somalia, Rwanda, Sudan, Congo, Burundi, Kenya and Eritrea. There are other refugees in Uganda, in camps of Kyangwari, Orukinga and Kyaka.

Somali Teens Post Beatings on YouTube (VIDEO)

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – A group of young, Somali men posted a video of themselves attacking pedestrians and bicyclists in St. Paul.

The suspects openly identify themselves in the video, and then attack unknowing victims. None of the victims have reported any of the attacks. St. Paul police is urging victims to step forward, if they recognize themselves in the video.

The video, posted by YouTube user “madbi001,” has since been removed from the website and the account has been closed.

The Midtown Greenway Coalition reported an incident of assault on the Greenway on Sunday, Nov. 15. A bicyclist was riding along the Greenway near 18th Ave. around 5:15 p.m. when they came across seven or eight young people running down the banks alongside the path, jumping and making noise.

The bicyclist attempted to alert a trailing rider, but they didn’t hear the alert and were chased down and knocked off their bike.

St. Paul police detectives are interviewing at least one suspect in connection with the attacks in the YouTube video.

A pair of 17-year-old Somalis from Minneapolis were charged this afternoon with first-degree murder in the killings of three people last week at a south Minneapolis market in what Hennepin County’s top prosecutor called “a robbery gone bad.”

Ahmed Shire Ali and Mahdi Hassan Ali were accused in a criminal complaint of killing two store employees and a customer who walked in just as the robbery got underway. He was immediately shot.

“It’s a tragic, senseless shooting,” said County Attorney Mike Freeman, in announcing three counts of first-degree murder against each defendant. “It’s a robbery gone bad.”

The two suspects are being held in lieu of $3 million bail each.

Court Freed Somali Plane Suspect

MOGADISHU, Somalia -- A Somali court acquitted and released a suspect who tried to board a plane in Mogadishu in November with chemicals and a syringe -- materials similar to those used in the attempted attack against a Detroit-bound airliner.

The news that Somali officials freed the suspect will hamper efforts by U.S. investigators to learn if the two attempted attacks were linked. Terrorism analysts had said the arrest in Somalia could prove highly valuable to the Detroit investigation.
