PORTLAND, Ore. - A man set himself on fire after pouring gasoline on himself outside Nicholas Ungar Furs at 12th and Yamhill Wednesday morning before police used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. He later died from his injuries at the hospital, police said.

The man was identified as 26-year-old Daniel Shaull from Kansas, according to the Multnomah County medical examiner.

It was not immediately clear whether Shaull was protesting against the store, which has had problem with animal rights activists in the past, but witnesses said he was screaming about the treatment of animals.

“There are animals dying! Animals dying!” witnesses said Shaull was screaming as flames engulfed his body and shot above his head.

“He tried to run into the building,” said witness Mike Cheema who owns a food cart a few feet from where the incident occurred. “The door was locked. He couldn’t get in. He came right out screaming, ‘the world is ending, animals dying!’”

“I looked over … flames, burning. I thought he was crazy,” said another witness L.C. “It was traumatizing. It was horrible.”

“I saw a guy that was running around with his arms waving, and he was completely on fire,” said Julie Sies who was walking to a dentist appointment at the time. “He was just screaming and asking for help.”

Witnesses gave different accounts of the path Shaull took while he was on fire. The fire blackened the sidewalk and charred remains were scattered about the area, including what appeared to be a footprint.

Shaull was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital where he later died.

No one at Nicholas Ungar Furs wanted to comment on the incident.

Officer accidentally used pepper spray on burning man

Update:

PORTLAND, Ore. - The first Portland Police officer to arrive on the scene of the man who set himself on fire Wednesday outside the Nicholas Ungar Furs store, accidentally used pepper spray in an attempt to put out the flames instead of a fire extinguisher, officials at the Portland Police Bureau said Thursday.

Police said the officer, who was nearby, saw 26-year-old Daniel Shaull from Kansas on fire, parked her patrol car, went to her trunk and accidentally grabbed pepper spray used for riot control instead of the fire extinguisher.

The canister of pepper spray the officer used is red like many fire extinguishers.

Police said someone else, a motorist who had been driving by, did grab an actual fire extinguisher to help Shaull, but he kept running away.

“They (officer and motorist) attempted to get the young man to roll on the ground to put out the flames,” Portland Police Chief Rosie Sizer said. “He kept running away and was uncooperative. Eventually, additional cover units arrived, and they were able to get him on the ground and extinguish the flames.”http://www.katu.com/news/local/82970607.html

He needs to be fined for contributing to Global Warming by burning all that carbon-based material!

Barbecued moonbat. Gotta love it.

So let me get this straight. He doesn’t wear fur, but he kills HIMSELF to keep US from wearing fur??!?

Reminds me of the [fill in this blank with the “stuck on stupid group you prefer: pollacks, Aggies, Democrats, whatever] who came home after working late and caught his wife in bed with another dude.

The (_______) doesn’t say a word, he just walks over to the nightstand and pulls out a loaded revolver — which he puts to his OWN head.

His wife, sitting up in bed, screams “NO! Please don’t!”

To which he replies: “Shut up bitch! You’re NEXT!”

Was he trying to catch the store on fire by running into it?

Yeah I suspect so, wanted to commit suicide and take out the store with him but forgot about locks.

I just yanked my conure's tail feather and he looked at me as if to ask why. I told him because he wasn't human.. not even a mammal.. that's why. So he nestled in my neck and is nibbling on my ear.

“I looked over … flames, burning. I thought he was crazy,” said another witness L.C.

Good thinking L.C. What was the first clue?

Whoa! They must have some big-ass pepper spray canisters!

Note to self: behave when in Portland. And don’t set oneself on fire, even accidentally.

“He kept running away and was uncooperative. Eventually, additional cover units arrived, and they were able to get him on the ground and extinguish the flames.”

...

It is not clear if the man was running away because of the effects of the pepper spray.

Sizer said she’s been told by the Portland Fire Bureau that the pepper spray used was water based and was not an accelerant. She said it did not make matters worse but that the use of the spray was regrettable.

OMG, guy's on fire and here comes the police with a cannister of pepper spray! It's really hard to maintain my composure here.
