“It seems that humans find new resources or create them in or to sustain themselves — a complete contradiction to what most of us were taught to believe.”

It seems people need a refesher in Adam Smith. More people, means greater specialisation. Greater specialisation increases productivity. The most productive areas also tend to have high population density.

Hard to get anyone to read Adam Smith when most don't even read the thread article.

“I’m sorry....whenever I read articles about “needing to have more babies” I just roll my eyes.

You don’t have to be an environmentalist to know we have finite resources and cannot expand infinitely. Populations will fluctuate to achieve an equilibrium.

I personally feel like the Earth would be a better place if our population adjusted down a couple billion. “

______

Agreed! I had the babies I could afford...I live within my means. THAT is what makes a country prosperous, not importing 3rd world socialist types who have 5, 6 or more kids, usually illegitimate, for me to pay to raise, incarcerate, educate, bury...

Yes, of course.

But let me give an example from my husband's family of chilbearing-age cousins to illustrate my point:

One cousin dropped out of high school, had floated from job to job, but married and had five kids -- all courtesy of the State of NJ. He's an economic parasite, whose continually preying off the State and off of the rest of the family with tales of woe for "his five kids".

Four of his cousins are all college-educated, have great careers, and those four cousins have a total of only four kids between all of them (One cousin has three) -- and if you ask them, they will tell you that "there are too many people in the world with too little resources, etc".

So the people who should be breeding aren't, because they -- and not their less educated parasitic cousin-- are hearing the "limited resources, too many people message" when in fact, these productive ones are the very people who are most likely to produce children who just might solve that resource problem.

I often wonder if when those who can afford them don't have kids and those who can't afford them breed like rabbits, it actually pushes us toward socialism -- as there are more of them than of us and they vote.

PS The "Have more babies!" wasn't directed at the third-worlders or economic parasites -- it was directed at those who are capable of raising them.
