Snow's Coming; Several Inches Possible

Mountains Will See Highest Accumulation

UPDATED: 6:29 pm EST January 29, 2010

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A huge winter storm is bearing down on the Carolinas.

The Upstate could see 3 to 5 inches of snow, with the potential for up to a foot of snow in the mountains. The storm could also bring significant sleet and ice.

Mixed rain and snow in the evening will give way to a period of accumulating snow. Roads are expected to become dangerous by midnight in areas north of Internet 85.

As the night wears on, snow will mix with and change to sleet and then freezing rain before diminishing around midday Saturday. Mixed snow and sleet is expected to result in hazardous driving conditions and a damaging accumulation of could topple trees and power lines.

A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet, and ice are expected or occurring. Heavy wet snow and/or ice accumulations may result in toppled trees and/or power lines. Travel is expected to become very hazardous or impossible.

An ice storm warning has been issued for areas from Newberry to Dillon, where as much as three-quarters of an inch of ice could coat trees and power lines.

Forecasters say some ice could form on bridges as far south as Columbia and Sumter.

Although uncertainty remains regarding the amount of precipitation that will fall, current indications are that total accumulations 10+ inches can be expected across North Carolina. Amounts may be a little less in the valleys of the southwest mountains, and in the Piedmont, where snow will mix with sleet and rain or freezing rain at times.

Snowfall totals may be higher across the high elevations of the mountains, especially in areas near the Blue Ridge.

Yeah, Ace Hardware was going crazy in Tulsa, last Wednesday, the day before it hit here... :-)

They were still bringing stuff in on pallets that day and people were grabbing all the winter related stuff.

NOAA says rain here in the Aiken area tonight and tomorrow. Nothing about ice or snow.

After consulting several sources, including my crystal ball, it looks like Aiken County will be right on the edge. Ice north, rain south.

Good for you.

44 in Aiken Cty. Light wind. Gentle rain.

My big concern is loss of power since I’m all electric.

COLUMBIA NOWCAST...

...ICE STORM WARNING (Newberry, Fairfield, & Kershaw counties)...

...FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY (Saluda, Lexington, Richland, Sumter, & Lee counties)

.....Rain will be spreading across the Midlands and increasing during the early morning hours. This will chill the air due to evaporation of the rain and temperatures will drop into the low to mid 30s by daybreak. Freezing rain and some sleet can be expected across the northern Midlands before sunrise.

.....Northeasterly winds will be feeding cold air into the Midlands for the remainder of the morning. Rain and freezing rain will be likely this morning with some ice accumulation over the northern half of the Midlands. Ice accumulations of about 1/4” are expected over the Ice Storm Warning area.

.....The precipitation will be tapering off in the afternoon. However, it will continue to be cloudy, breezy, and quite cold. Temperatures will hover in the low to mid 30s, but wind chills will be in the 20s.

Chief Meteorologist

Raining in Lexington at 6:36 a.m. We’ve got tickets to the USC/Georgia game tonight; hope it doesn’t impact that.

31 degrees here in Abbeville at 7:00 AM Saturday. A glaze of ice on the trees and vehicles. I’m hoping Easley gets a good snow so my grand-daughters get to play in it.

I’m in Ballentine on Lake Murray.

Hey! I used to live right there, near the marina.

I just bundled up & took the dog for a walk. It’s so pretty out, but I’m glad I don’t have to drive anywhere today!

I went to Disneyland today. It was in the high 60’s and sunny. Great weather and not crowded at all. I stayed a little over 5 hours.
