The unnamed 28-year-old reportedly arrived from China on Monday, defecting to the north for ideological reasons according to North Koreans who spoke to the conservative Dong-A Ilbo daily newspaper, based in Seoul.
"I came here because I did not want to serve as a cannon fodder in the capitalist military," the American was quoted as saying. "I want to serve in the North Korean army."
American State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said that the report was being investigated but said there was no information on the man's name, occupation, or the circumstances in which he entered North Korea.
The American crossed the border near the city of Tumen in northeast China into North Korea's Onsong County on Monday, according to the the Seoul newspaper.
North Korean representatives have told the United States that it is holding a second US citizen, as well as the Christian activist Robert Park. He was detained on Christmas Day after he entered the nation to protest against human rights violations.
North Korea, which has no diplomatic relations with Washington, informed the United States through its mission to the United Nations in New York. The United States has asked Sweden, which handles US interests in Pyongyang, to look into the case, Mr Crowley said.
The North's official Korean Central News Agency had earlier said in a short dispatch that authorities had detained an American on Monday for crossing the border and that he was now under investigation.
Mr Crowley said that the United States understood that it was a fresh case and that the report was not referring to Robert Park.
The detentions came as North Korea defiantly fired live artillery into the sea near its disputed border with the democratic South, despite warnings by both Washington and Seoul that the actions were provocative.

Yeah, everybody wants to go to North Korea nowadays.
Hey, don’t send him back either, kkthx.
I guess what he is saying is this:
"I want to serve as a cannon fodder in the North Korean army."
if true that makes me laugh. Good luck
Obama should defect to North Korea. They are mutually compatible.
Years ago, an American “defected” along with his family, to the Soviet Union. Now, any American can move to the SU/Russia so “defecting” isn’t an issue.
However, it turned out that the “defector” was Communist Party USA organizer Arnold Lockshin and his CP wife.
As Rhett Butler would say, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”.
Or, as Barney Frank would say, “Frankly my rear, I could use a ram.”
I’m bad. Also snowed in with 6+ inches of global warming snow. Gives me time to think up nasty things to say about our enemies and their dupes.

I respect him. At least, he is consistent and true to his belief. I’m sure there are zillion communist-minded ideologists living in the Western capitalist countries at this moment, and perhaps million of them living in the US. These people want to have both worlds: communist in heart and capitalist in their lifestyle.
Check back in 20 years. ;-)
Ah, to be young and an ignorant assclown...
He is like a piece of Juicy Fruit. For the moment the flavor is great, but very shortly he will be done, and NK will spit him out. He will just be a little black dot on the sidewalk.

He’s probably from Madison Wisconsin.
He must have a taste for human meat.
