If he'd said it of Jews, he would still be apologizing.
If he'd said it of blacks, he'd be on BET, begging absolution.
If he'd said it of women, the National Organization for Women would have his carcass turning slowly on a spit over an open flame.
But he said it of the poor, so he got away with it.
"He" is South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, running for governor on the GOP ticket. Speaking of those who receive public assistance, he recently told an audience, "My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don't think too much further than that. And so what you've got to do is you've got to curtail that type of behavior. They don't know any better."
You read that right. The would-be governor of one of the poorest states there is likens the poor to stray animals.
And though it drew some newspaper notice, a riposte from "The Daily Show" and rebukes from Bauer's opponents, it never quite rose to the level of national controversy, as it would've had Bauer compared, say, women or Jews to the dogs one feeds at one's back door. The relative silence stands as eloquent testimony to the powerlessness and invisibility of the American poor.
One is reminded how earnestly shocked news media were at the poverty they saw five years ago when New Orleans drowned. "Why didn't they get out?" observers kept asking — as if everyone has a car in the driveway and a wallet full of plastic.

Dr. Sowell has stated that the vast majority of the “poor” don’t stay in that category, but move up the economic ladder.
I’ll bet the vast majority of freepers were “poor” when they started, but pressed on with life and succeeded.
Secondly, the “poor” in this country live like kings compared to the truly poor people in other countries. U.S. “poor” have cars, TVs, cellphones, refridgerators, food, money, etc.
Bauer was quoting his grandmother—a wiser woman than those representing my generation (UA Class of 2010).
And they are fat, too.
Yes they are. That’s because food stamps are used to buy chips, cookies, and other wonderful processed foods. Then they go to the ER to get treatment for their fat butts and cost us more money there.
I guess the benevolent liberals throwing the poor dog bones the last seventy some odd years has managed to herd the stray pack.

That is because people cannot choose their gender or ethnicity but poverty (at least for adults) is a choice. Walter Williams has a fantastic article about this which he sums up thusly:
Avoiding long-term poverty is not rocket science. First, graduate from high school. Second, get married before you have children, and stay married. Third, work at any kind of job, even one that starts out paying the minimum wage. And, finally, avoid engaging in criminal behavior.

One of these things is not like the others.
Everyone always mentions that the "Poor" buy starchy greasy processed food because they are poor.
If they were REALLY poor, they would get USDA/food bank/Farmers' Market staples and cook from scratch, save a fortune, and be healthier. I had neighbors once who were on welfare, because of the breadwinner's legitimate disbility. They did just that, and ate very well, and the kids were in good physical condition
Many are poor because they won't work.
Cooking is work.
Processed food is easy. Just open it and eat, and pay someone else to have done the preparation...Or to put it differently, our "poor" have chefs.
One always wonders where compassion goes. I'll be honest about where mine went. We see a "Homeless" person, and initially are tempted to give them money. Then we ask ourselves, "Where are this person's family and friends?" Well, the family and friends usually have been looted to buy drugs, etc., and they are not allowed near them any more. At some point the individual made a choice about how they wanted to live.
I was poor as a kid. I decided I didn't like it, and avoided it. That was my choice. They made theirs.

Here in my tiny little Southern town, we have two grocery stores. On one side of town, we have the more "normal", or regular store, and on the other side we have what I call the "ghetto grocery". I switch going back and forth between them, since they are about an equal distance from my house.
What REALLY pisses me off is when I go to the "ghetto grocery" and I see folks with TWO grocery buggies... and when you get behind them in the checkout line you see that they are paying for the items in the "food buggy" with EBT. Then, they pay for the "beer, wine, and cigarette buggy" with cash.
Am I the only one who sees a problem here?
This is a blind squirrel/nut moment for Bauer... he is an idiot with NO chance. Folks here will never get past his immature, bratty behavior.

This woman is a Matre’d in a very high end
resturant but if you could see her house you

Once I watched a woman in line in front of me buy lobster with food stamps. I was infuriated since we couldn't afford to with cash.
My daughter, an ER nurse tells me people come in with all sorts of the latest technological gadgets, blackberrys, nails and hair done, gold teeth, overweight and ask for food while waiting on the doctor. And oh BTW no insurance.
“Give someone a fish, they'll eat for a day. Teach them to fish....” Somehow we have a disconnect, we need to stop giving them fish.
There are those that are truly down on their luck, for the lazy, I have no compassion
when I was a engineering undergraduate, lived off of ramen noodles and a part time job. I was “homeless” once my junior year. My grades never suffered. By all accounts I was beyond poor, but I was not eligible for “aid”. I was eligible for loans that I would have to pay back, i never took them!
