Long Says 'Soul Mate' Kudlow Is 'Dead Serious' About Senate Run
New York Daily News ^ | January 29, 2010 | Elizabeth Benjamin

State Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long had a "real positive" dinner meeting with Larry Kudlow earlier this week and came away believing the CNBC host and supply-side economist is "dead serious" about considering a challenge to Sen. Chuck Schumer.

Long, who dined with Kudlow at his invitation at Nicola's on E 84th Street, said he had been tempted to call Kudlow himself after a Facebook page seeking to draft him into the Senate race was created. But he decided to wait it out and let the would-be candidate come to him, instead.

"I was tempted, but I've been down these roads too many times," Long said. "He called me and said: 'Look, I'd like to buy you dinner. I want to talk about what's taking place.'"

"I know him a long time," the chairman continued. "He's not a guy who just picks up the phone. That's not his MO. I'm going to be honest with you - he's dead serious about considering this."

Long said Kudlow seemed unfazed by the prospect of having to give up his TV show and seeing his personal troubles aired yet again. He said Kudlow reiterated the line about retiring Schumer being a "noble cause."

According to Long, Kudlow lives in New York City in an apartment that the chairman has actually visited (he didn't mention where it is located). He also has a house in Connecticut, where he was floated last year as a potential Senate candidate. Long wasn't sure where Kudlow is registered to vote; he said he didn't ask.

Despite his experience of seeing would-be candidates flirt with the idea of running on a third party line and ultimately decide against it, Long is allowing himself to get a little excited about the idea of "Kudlow for Senate".

"I consider myself a soul-mate, philosophically, of Larry," Long told me. "I only say that when someone hits all the right chords on issues, and he does."

"I just think he would be the right guy to run against Chuck Schumer, and in this climate, with his background, I think he would ignite national attention. He would be able to match him and raise a tremendous amount of money."

Long said Kudlow didn't give him any sort of timeline for making a decision about whether he'll get into the race. Kudlow is scheduled to meet tonight with state GOP Chairman Ed Cox, but he declined Long's invitation to speak at the Conservative Party's political action conference in Albany this weekend.

"I told him we'll stay in touch," Long said. "He's not ready to make any particular move at this stage of the game."

Thank you. This is so exciting. There aren’t too many good politicians in NY, and we need a breath of fresh air, like Kudlow.

You’re welcome; glad to help!

Posting and tweeting about a Kudlow campaign can really help.

I agree, and calling talk shows helps, too.

Who’s perfect and what counts is what kind of person he is now.

That's what you and I say. It's certainly not what the voters in NY are going to say.

Larry Kudlow is an idiot when it comes to illegals.

That article makes a lot of sense to me. What part do you dispute.

“That article makes a lot of sense to me. What part do you dispute.”

Kudlows only solution to illegals flooding the US is to increase the number of uneducated poor legal immigrants from Mexico to 400,000 a year? He is against securing the border because it won’t be perfect. “You can build a fence, but desperate Mexicans in search of economic opportunity will climb over it”. The same can be said about the rest of the poor in South America(or the world) who would love to be in the US. He trivializes the cost of illegals “only 10 percent of illegal Mexicans have sent a child to an American public school”. What he ignores is the high cost per student($18,300 in NYC)and the fact that those illegals have large families that overwhelm the school and health care systems. By Kudlows reasoning California is in a better financial situation today because of all the poor illegals that have flooded that state. Kudlow also belittles those who disagree with him on this issue as “blinded by fear-mongering”. On his radio show Kudlow has insinuated that this is about racism.
I live in NY. Sure he would be better then Sen Shmuck but I have no doubt that Kudlow as Senator, a Conservative Party candidate, would vote for a Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill with no serious enforcement provisions.

That is why Larry Kudlow is an idiot when it comes to illegals.

As I said before (with tongue in cheek) in liberal NYS, it might help him. :)

People who let their emotions take over issues like immigration sometimes end up seeing what they expect to find in an article, instead of what is already there. Kudlow does say that the only solution is to increase the number to 400,000 a year, he cites Tamar Jacoby of the Manhattan Institute, who says the workforce can support it. He is correct that an unpoliced border fence is a waste of time and money. He's not "trivializing" the cost of illegals, when is point is that a high percentage of them pay into the system without taking advantage of it. And if you're blaming immigration for all of California's troubles (or even most), that makes you something worse than an idealogue.

Its not that Kudlow and other free market capitalists are trying to create a wave of illegal immigration. What doesn't get reported is that they also want ot get rid of minimum wage laws and government entitlements that encourage these people to come here and do nothing. It is a fact that there is currently a shortage of unskilled labor that is actually willing to work.

“And if you’re blaming immigration for all of California’s troubles (or even most), that makes you something worse than an idealogue.”

California’s nearly 3 million illegal immigrants cost taxpayers at least $9 billion each year. California is presently facing a $20 billion budget gap. So yes, I would consider that a major factor in California’s troubles.
A study listed in the Manhattan Institute came to the conclusion that immigrant families cost each native-born household in California an additional $1,200 a year in taxes.
www.manhattan-institute.org/html/_chicsuntimes-why_unskilled_immigrants.htm

“He’s not “trivializing” the cost of illegals, when is point is that a high percentage of them pay into the system without taking advantage of it”

Kudlow clearly trivializes costs of illegals with the disingenuous statement that “roughly two-thirds of undocumented immigrants pay” some tax. Its all about overall cost to a state which a free market capitalist such as Kudlow must understand. It doesn’t matter if many illegals pay taxes when fiscal impact studies invariably find that the expenditures attributable to illegal immigrants exceed their tax payments by a wide margin.

“It is a fact that there is currently a shortage of unskilled labor that is actually willing to work”

Of course, if I can easily hire an illegal for $80 a day with no repercussions why would I ever hire a legal worker?
