Wonder what brought this on?It could be retaliation for the total trashing of Huntsville and Madison, AL by the cancellation of Constellation and the suggestion of turning all those rocket-scientist geniuses into weather monitors and terrorist guards.

"its worth reading the article..he is upset over two things right now...an FBI center funding and a deal over building tankers in his state." It's more than that. Shelby doesn't like 0bama's "Card check," 0bama's "Cap-n-trade" would kill Alabama's logging industry with tree fees, plus Alabama got screwed over on the high speed rail funds and missile defense de-funding, too.
Plus, Senator Shelby is one of the few Senators with brass balls and a strong dislike of 0bama's hyper-liberal nominees.

Shelby has balled up to Obama more than any Senator since Hunter. He is an powerful ally.

Actually, Northrop won the contract then Boeing cuddled up to someone in the administration and the contract was held up. Boeing was then given numbers from the Northrop contract so that they could “compete”.
Maybe it’s all because Boeing in Alabama would have built the plane, but it’s cheating when someone is given a second chance to bid, with the numbers from the other guys bid.
At least, when I was working it was cheating.

Earmarks for his state. He is insisting the RFP for a big contract be tweaked so Airbus can win it, thereby giving his state the ability to make the parts. A huge boon for his state. Will any Republicans come out against this earmark grab before the Dems do? It would be smart politics for them to do so. Theres also a 2nd earmark he wants for his state but I forget what it is.
I think the second was for some expansion of an Army base in Alabama.
I think it's pretty telling that he used to be a Democrat because this sounds exactly like something a Democrat would do.

They are cast iron balls.
Check out the casting mold seam around the middle.
Don’t know what they are for - Republicans don’t use them.

He is feuding with the administration over a new Air Force tanker that could be assembled in Alabama, and a new FBI explosives center.

He's doing it because it's an election year. Just because it's Obama's nominees doesn't make it any less sleazier. I wouldn't expect much from the guy - he only switched from being a Democrat after the GOP got control of Congress. I'm in a state governed by a Republican who also switched from the Democratic party when it became clear they were on their way out in our state, so I'm quite familiar with what these types will do to stay in power.
Election-year politics over pork is still election-year politics. Writing it off because the other side is led by Obama doesn't make it any better, in fact writing it off like that is what allows this situation to continue.

**Shelby’s holds mean that the Senate cannot vote on a nominee unless the hold is broken using a cloture vote that requires 60 senators or if the senator lifts the hold.**

Boeing toadied up to murtha (RIH), and their other paid shills in congress to get the DOD to cancel the contract.
Boeing in Alabama doesn’t have the capacity to build a Guillows glider nevermind an actual aircraft for the Air Force.
The biggest reason why the Air Force went with Northrop is because Northrop had an aircraft that was already built, and flying at the time unlike Boeing’s franken-tanker that is still a CAD drawing.

No, they will be BUILDING the aircraft here in the U.S.
Unlike Boeing with the tail built in Italy, the wings built in Japan, with other major components built in China and Russia. All Boeing was going to do is screw and glue the parts together.
