Mid-Atlantic shuts down ahead of huge snow warning (NWS Alert - warns of 20-30 inches of snowfall)

WASHINGTON – Shoppers jammed aisles and emptied stores of milk, bread and shovels Friday as a massive snowstorm blew into the Mid-Atlantic. Forecasters predicted a record 30 inches or more for the nation's capital, and authorities already were blaming the storm for the deaths of father-son Samaritans in Virginia.

The region's second snow storm in less than two months could be "extremely dangerous," and heavy, wet snow and strong winds threatened to knock out power, the National Weather Service said.

Flakes started falling around noon in Washington, where the federal government sent workers home early. The storm's wide swath and predictions of historic proportions for an area ill-equipped for snow had airlines canceling flights and school districts closing hours before any snow arrived.

The last time D.C. got at least 28 inches of snow was in 1922. The city has seen more than a foot only 13 times since 1870, according to the National Weather Service. The storm was expected to track through Virginia and West Virginia, across Maryland into southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

I think Vancouver might resort to Indian dancing to bring snow to them.
Last time I checked you can only truck so much....
And warm weather will continue to melt it....

I keep waiting for this thing to get going....

did Obama mess with things man was not meant to?

How do you think he got elected, including having McCain as a running mate?

He sold his soul to the devil.

First Haiti...now this.

You are right, it is Global Warming.

Apparently, temperatures in the Pacific Ocean were 2 degrees warmer this summer (centigrade?). This has created an extremely strong El Nino event which has caused all this precipitation across North America. They really needed it in the West after several years of drought. Remember the big fires.

El Nino has no relationship whatsoever to the hoax known as “Golbal Warming.” - It is a normal cyclical pattern that has been less frequent in recent years due to the delay in the sun spot cycle.

This system dumped some rain in South Florida tonight but is clearing out, paving the way for what should be a dry and coolish Super Bowl game Sunday night.

The wife and I just took a walk down to the bay and I must say that the Nor Easter is getting cranked up baby!

The wind is howling and it looks as if we are starting to get one and a half to two inches of snow an hour now!

Wooooo Hoooo!

I do hear tell that there's another system on its heels.

According to the models Philthy could be looking at another 6 to 10" next Wednesday and Thursday.

I had to come home in this stuff tonight around 10 pm and I have never driven in such heavy snow - it was like quicksand for my van. And I’m up in NE Ohio where we’re only supposed to get 6-12.

Both my bros live in MD, one right outside DC and the other farther east. I called the DC brother a while ago to ask him what time he tees off tomorrow - both bros are avid golfers and they like to remind me of how mild their weather is when we have lake effect snow. :)

Actually, I was kidding a bit about it being global warming. However, it does seem that the higher temperature in the Pacific has triggered this unusually strong El Nino and it’s many effects. However, next year the Pacific could be a lot cooler again. Who knows??

During the last real strong El Nino (1998) there was Dorado caught off the coast of Southern California. That is a warm water fish. They are no where near the southern California coast now. Way down south in Baja. The waters in the Eastern Pacific, Gulf of Mexico and in the Atlantic are now primarily colder then normal. So the whole theory of warmer water causing these recent large precipitation amounts is complete bunk. There are many factors that determine evaporation rates. Air pressure, humidity and wind speed are very critical. There are two large low pressures forming together near DC right now. Those low pressures are sucking in water vapor from the colder then normal ocean waters. It is the size and magnitude of the low air pressure systems. The storm that dumped over 7 feet of snow in the mountains of So Cal, broke many state city records for lowest ever pressure. Warmer water will evaporate more water, but it is only one component of evaporation. Besides, how in the heck did the ancient Glaciers form during a cold period ?

It is midnight and I am going to bed. First I will go out and dig the 10 to 12 inches in front of my house so I don’t have two feet to dig in the morning. Cheers!!

Lots of blue on this map. Only two real hot spots (orange) right now. Eastern Greenland and South Western Atlantic. Probably caused by warmer then normal high pressure driven winds coming off the land. Note the Atlantic waters near DC are very cold.

Usually you probably get it worse than me here in Pittsburgh. There are times I have a dusting and my mom in McCandless Twp (close to Wexford) in No Allegheny Co gets a few inches.
