Two Cheers for the Maine Ladies
NRO ^ | 2/5/2010 | Robert Costa

Posted on 02/05/2010 12:02:00 PM PST by Servant of the Cross

When Obamacare sailed into rough waters near Christmas, most Republicans jumped ship. But two GOP senators, Maine’s Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, clung to the battered vessel right until Ben Nelson cut the rope.

This week, the Maine ladies redeemed themselves with their handling of the Republican riposte to President Obama’s foundering anti-terror policy. It was a welcome surprise. As northeast moderates, Snowe and Collins could have easily continued to glide through Senate life, secure in their belief that the GOP is lucky to have them on its side. Yet, refreshingly, in both tone and substance, they snapped this week — irking everyone from Robert Gibbs and Eric Holder to Rachel Maddow and the Huffington Post — coming down hard on the Obama administration’s handling of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the failed Christmas bomber.

Maybe, after months of patiently listening to a logorrheic swirl of health-care arguments from liberals, Collins and Snowe have had enough of Team Obama’s talk-talk ways. Maybe the success of their new Senate neighbor, Scott Brown, shook them awake. Whatever the reason, the duo showed real verve in taking a scalpel to the administration’s excuses and the incoherent bureaucracy otherwise known as our national-security apparatus.

Collins, the ranking Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, shined in the GOP’s radio and video response to the president’s weekly address, denouncing the Obama administration for enabling Abdulmutallab to lawyer up right after he tried to take down Northwest Airlines Flight 253. “Less than one hour,” Collins said. “That’s right, less than one hour. In fact, just 50 minutes. That’s the amount of time that the FBI spent questioning Abdulmutallab, the foreign terrorist who tried to blow up a plane on Christmas Day. Then, he was given a Miranda warning and a lawyer, and, not surprisingly, he stopped talking.” (snip)

Think of it as 'open-mike' Friday. A title like this may never ever have a chance of making it to FReerepublic again. A toast to the twins on this one issue.

Out of all the “maybe’s” as to why it’s definetely Scott Brown. These two are Marxists. Only a slap in the face like Brown’s win for a Kennedy seat would make them change their tune. They’ll be back to their old ways soon.

The Weak Sisters... is it time to revisit the sobriquet?

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find only things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelogus

“They’ll be back to their old ways soon.”

Not so sure - I’m thinking the heat is going to be turned up throughout NE till November - It’s going to be a god year, a very good year.

If Patches continues to undergo fire, I don't know if they'll return to their old ways.

Likely they'll be thinking about their seats getting hotter as well.

I saw Olympia Snowe with Lieberman in the hallway on CSPAN right after the Senate vote on the healthcare bill. She was making noises about how she was still reserved on a few details, but she was grinning like the Cheshire cat all the while.

My guess is that Scott Brown has hit her like a wet mackerel to the face and snapped her out of her spell. She will be backpeddling from Obama as hard as she can on every conceivable issue from now till her re-election. No doubt some internal polling has changed her attitude as well. Ahh, the smell of flopsweat in the morning....

Screw both of them. I was in DC and urged both of them to not vote for the porkulus and their offices looked at us like we were idiots.

The phones were ringing off the wall with most people telling them the same as we were, a fact confirmed by the staff, yet they both still voted like a liberal with Arlene Specter and the damn thing passed.

Good article, but a bit too much speculation on the author’s part. Snowe has always been a hawk on defense and security issues. Collins has consistently been very tough when it comes to the WOT and foreign affairs in general. Their liberal social stances and their worrisome trend towards big government economics (porkulus, Obamacare) don’t change that.
