WASHINGTON – A blizzard battered the Mid-Atlantic region Saturday, with emergency crews struggling to keep pace with the heavy, wet snow that has piled up on roadways, toppled trees and left thousands without electricity.

Officials urged people to huddle at home and out of the way of emergency crews. Forecasters said the storm could be the biggest for the nation's capital in modern history.

A record 2 1/2 feet or more was predicted for Washington. As of early Saturday, 10 inches of snow was reported at the White House, while parts of Maryland and West Virginia were buried under more than 20 inches. Forecasters expected snowfall rates to increase, up to 2 inches per hour through Saturday morning.

Blizzard warnings were issued for the District of Columbia, Baltimore, parts of New Jersey and Delaware, and some areas west of the Chesapeake Bay.

This is the snowiest winter I remember, but hardly the coldest (age 71). I am going green to save the green. Installed CFLs throughout my house 15 years ago. Started saving $10 per month on electric bills. Figure I have saved $1500 to $2000 just in electricity, not to mention saved money on bulbs and having to change them every six months.

If you deny that Global Warming is real, then of course you are a denier. Whether or not it is real, it is the act of denying that makes you a denier, not the reality of the issue. My point is that the issue is complicated and I think the jury is still out.

Being an Iowa boy, I'm amused at the people's reaction here in DC to two feet of snow. Just in December, my 87 year old mom back in Iowa got snowed in for several days by a real blizzard. The only complaint she had was that the garage was a mess because she couldn't get the doors open to let the dogs outside, so she had to let them go in the garage.

I have to admit that it IS prudent to not drive around DC when there's a lot of snow. We've got a lot of immigrants that haven't ever seen snow. Many of those have never driven cars before coming here, either. That's a good enough reason to clear the driveway and the snowplow drifts, but then sit back and enjoy the fire and a good book.

What I have heard was that the streets were planned so that cannon could shoot down them at the invading troops.

Could also be true.

I got my info from a piece I once read about the architect who drew up the original layout for DC (I forget his name at the moment).

Now you have an idea of what it means to live in Buffalo (as I do). We get what you got at least twice a year. There are worse things that can happen to you.

I remembered that he was a Frenchman, but the name escaped me. Thanks for that.

Yeah those light bulbs mandated by the government have mercury in them, are more expensive , lower light and there are other kinds of bulbs that do last long, even the old type, Leds etc.. How do you like that mercury build up in your environment? How's your hope and change?

You can do what you want to. If someone believes something will save them money individually and wants to put all that money and time into it that doesn't mean they have to “go green”. “Going green” means that you are saving energy to save the planet. A lot of companies and individuals are doing all sorts of ridiculous things that are a big waste of money going green, like painting their roofs white, expensive hybrids etc.

I am against the government regulation of private businesses and the lives of individuals. Your going along with the liberals/Marxists in their campaign of “going green” instead of rebelling only aids their cause.

If some moron wants to waste time and money buying an expensive hybrid, paints their house and car white etc. it doesn't bother me , but them in effect joining the marxist “green” movement does hurt the country because it makes it easier for the government to sell to the public that it is doing something "good" and so to pass even more laws like the ones they passed banning light bulbs, large cars etc. Our economy is crippled because of fake environmental hoaxes like global warming. People want to go green for a hoax. If you are going "green" what you think is a net benefit to matters not to me. But you saying you are going green just validates and legitimize their marxist/socialist plot of "going green" which is just a plot to destroy capitalism and turn the U.S. into a socialist state.

It’s fun yet annoying at the same time.

However, our worthless HOA has yet to plow the parking lots at our townhome development...so I might not be going to work tomorrow. I attempted to move our 4WD SUV and even it won’t budge more than a foot in this stuff.

Unlike everywhere else I’ve lived, the streets in DC are alphabetical. If you turn down the wrong one, assuming you know your alphabet, you just go back the other way. Also, wasn’t this woman in her own neighborhood? Even if you couldn’t see street signs because of the snow, you can see landmarks. I dunno. I still think this woman was a little dumb.

A true $pending FReeze, indeed.

Well, No not really..

but if 32 inches of snow is not a good enough hint..

It may well take a Cat 5 ‘cane or worse to flush that rat nest of profligate porkers.

Uh...yeah she was. She could have easily wound up frozen to death.

They walk among us. Even in sub-zero blizzard conditions.

Damn You Al Gore!

A woman digs her car out of the snow in Chevy Chase, Maryland. A bitter chill heaped new misery on the US east coast Sunday, leaving thousands shivering without power as emergency crews battled to clear snow-clogged streets before a new winter storm hits. (AFP/Mandel Ngan)

Just now got my power back on in Northern Virginia. It had been off since Friday night. I shoveled the driveway this morning (I’m *really* not supposed to be doing that!) but that was the only way it was going to get done. I wanted to get it done as early as possible, so that the sunshine would dry the pavement. It worked, my driveway, though steep, isn’t slippery any more.

Staying warm was a bit of a challenge.

That’s enough snow for me for a while.
