A single engine, two seat plane crashed into a restroom building near Mesa’s Red Mountain Multigenerational Center Sunday morning after the engine failed, according to a Mesa Fire spokesman.

There were no major injuries to the two men on board.

The pilot was able to land the plane about 8:35 a.m. in a desert  area of Red Mountain Park. However, as he was taxiing, the pilot had to veer so he wouldn’t hit a man and his dog who were walking in the area, said Mesa Fire Department spokesman Thor Watson.

According to Watson, the plane, veered and crashed into a free-standing restroom building. The restroom was closed and locked, and no one was inside. The building has been closed for a while, possibly due to budget cuts.

The front of the plane went through the section of the restroom reserved for men and took out a wall and part of the roof.

The crash took off part of the right wing of the privately-owned plane, described as a World War II Chinese trainer, a Nanchang CJ-6A..

The unidentified passenger had paid to fly in the plane, which had taken off from Falcon Field.

The male pilot was not injured. The passenger hit his head and was taken to a hospital  for minor head lacerations as a precaution.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.

Yes, and if they can use the plane afterwords, it is a great landing.

Sounds like the landing was good, but that after safely landing he had to avoid a man who, while walking his dog, didn’t have the presence of mind to stay way clear of the taxiing plane.

I hope no woman was in there at the time. It might have (been a) disaster.

I blame the dog. If he hadn’t wanted to go for a walk, his owner wouldn’t have been there, and the pilot wouldn’t have crashed into the restroom building.
