A Federal Effort to Push Junk Food Out of Schools
The New York Times ^ | February 7, 2010 | GARDINER HARRIS AND GRANT JUNKIE

Posted on 02/08/2010 6:35:59 PM PST by Eric Blair 2084

The Obama administration will begin a drive this week to expel Pepsi, French fries and Snickers bars from the nation’s schools in hopes of reducing the number of children who get fat during their school years. In legislation, soon to be introduced, candy and sugary beverages would be banned and many schools would be required to offer more nutritious fare.

To that end, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will deliver a speech Monday at the National Press Club in which he will insist, according to excerpts provided to The Times, that any vending machines that remain in schools be “filled with nutritious offerings to make the healthy choice the easy choice for our nation’s children.”

The first lady, Michelle Obama, said last month that she would lead an initiative to reduce childhood obesity, and her involvement “shows the importance all of us place on this issue,” Mr. Vilsack said.

I am no longer afraid of the health Reich being tipped off by my advice and what not to do.

They are making the same mistake that Hitler made. Fighting a war on two fronts out of greed and paranoia. They should have stuck with the war on smokers.

For example, my kids when I used to smoke would hit me with the brainwashed stuff they heard in school:

"Daddy, smoking is bad, when are you going to stop. It's bad for your health."

I used to say "So is that junk food you are eating. No more chips or chocolate!" They would scream, nooooooooo!!!!!

I digress...

If there is a bright side to all of the left wing nannying is that it is a great win for the future of conservatism.

Kids google, they are online. They know which side is for freedom and which side wants to treat them like perpetual children.

They don't subscribe to the NY Times.

I’m still trying to figure out when junk food got into the schools. It sure wasn’t there when I was in school in the early 80s.

How much of these "nutritious" foods will spoil and get wasted in vending machines? My work has vending machines which offer fruit, vegetable sticks, and low-fat sandwiches that basically rot in the machine. No one buys them because they're too expensive and not practical at the moment.

“Hey, kids, remember the Snickers, Cheez-Its, Twinkies and Coca-Cola that used to sit in that vending machine full of granola bars, trail mix, oatmeal packs and tofu bites? Obama took them away.”

Oh no, not Snickers. What’s going to happen to Betty White?

When School Boards got a piece of the action from vending machine sales, that’s when. . .

Tons of small businessmen make a living off of providing and stocking these machines. They live pretty comfortable middle class lives. They have targets painted on their backs.

When I attended public school, there was absolutely no vending machine. Not for cigarettes, not for snickers bars, not for anything. We ate breakfast at home. Lunch was what was served in the lunchroom or brought from home. If we wanted to eat something after school, we went home. End of story.

The only vending machines in my school were in the teacher’s lounge and that was definite off limits territory.

Doesn’t seem like we ate a lot of crap when we were out of school either.

It would solve a lot more problems to eliminate federally funded public schools. Primarily ignorance and hatred of America.

They didn’t allow us to wear shorts to school and they didn’t allow us to leave for lunch either. Of course we could bring guns to school during hunting season as long as they were in our car. We could also have a parent drop us off with a gun which was kept in the office till after school.

This was in the early 80s. Times have changed.

They'll just make it up in other ways. Heavy kids usually have heavy parents that let them eat whatever they want.

Libs care about you as much as they care about the bar owner that they put out of business to advance their social engineering agenda when they banned smoking.

It’s for the greater good. We need to coerce them to make better choices.

(Unless you pay millions into the state coffers)

I just don’t understand why people are so shocked when the govt wants to have more control over govt schools. These schools take so much money for federal school lunch programs...of course there will be strings attached!
