(Newser) Soda drinkers could face a sharply higher risk of developing cancer than those who abstain from soft drinks.
A study looking at 60,000 Chinese Singaporeans over 14 years found that those who drank more than two sodas a week were 87% more likely to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer than people who drank no soda.
Though the study merely identified the correlation between cancer and soda intake, the researchers speculate that it may have to do with the effect of the extra sugar on insulin production.
But some scientists are skeptical: "The study was well designed but smaller than some previous studies that did not find a link between sugar-sweetened soft drinks and pancreatic cancer," noted an expert at the American Cancer Society.
Others point out that soda drinkers may simply be more likely to engage in another activity, such as smoking, that raises cancer risk, HealthDay reports.
Could?
More pop-science [pardon the pun]
Well, beer lowers the risk. So........
More beer!
( I like your thinking. ;-) )
How about those who drink two cups of coffee per day?
......60,000 Chinese Singaporeans?
ping
Hey, it’s Communist China! Everybody knows they put lead in everything. Probably a little asbestos and plutonium for extra body and smoothness, too.
Don’t tell me the commie ‘RATS have run out of schemes already. We already did this one back in the 70s!!! Damn liberals.
Here we go again, more garbage in the guise of a “study” telling us how bad soda is. Get ready for HUGE taxes on soft drinks.
I better start stocking up on my favorite “cola” drink. I drink about 6 or 7 every day-—but only for the last 50 years or so........
Coffee anyone?

proof we need to tax sodas! For the Children!
Maybe I should really shake up the libs and mention that when I have a coke, I always have a smoke with it!
One would be good.
But TWO????
You are soooo screwed!
I always drop in a pack of salted peanuts!
Prolly causes constipation and diarrhea too.
This is another of those “% of risk” assessment studies that ALWAYS leave a dramatic impression, even though the numbers may be less so.
For example, say . . .
The rate of pancreatic cancer in the general population is 8 per 100,000. (i think that’s close) Then among coke drinkers the 87% increase means that there are about 15 per 100,000.
Somewhat significant, but changing the odds from 8/100,000 to 15/100,000 isn’t exactly terrifying.
I’m no scientist, but I’d guess that two of just about anything per week would have a negligible of any kind, even hits of crack. The problem is nobody does two hits of crack per week.
