Weird, I woke up suddenly at 4, went and looked at the news and read there had just been an earthquake. I’m going back to bed now.

Wow, I know that town and have been there several times. It’s right on the way to DeKalb and Northern Illinois University from the NW Suburbs of Chicago.

I felt the one that hit Southern Illinois in the mid-to late 1980s (can’t remember the exact year). It was a little higher on the scale, but down south, not up north...

I haven’t read through the thread yet. I hope everyone is OK... Some beautiful OLD structures in that area of Illinois... A lot of farmland too though (at least a decade go there was...).

No, that would be very, very tragic... With the way the buildings like that are on the South side many, many people would die, including the police and firefighters, etc... who would have to try to save and rescue people.

As for this earthquake; 4.3 may not be a very big earthquake, but it’s not like these older towns have much in the way of building reinforcements due to any risk factors. It’s not an area that gets earthquakes often at all... Plus there is a college close to Sycamore in DeKalb (the county seat) - Northern Illinois Univ. is there — a pretty big college and a pretty big college town as well as agricultural “hub”. Might even be a “small city” officially now as I haven’t been there in 12 years...

I'm in DeKalb, but snoozed right through it.

Still a lot of farmland around here.

My point — only the towns, and the larger village/small city of DeKalb is thankfully the only area to worry about. Were it in Chicago itself for example, there is suburbs for miles and miles and except for the skyscrapers perhaps downtown the buildings are not built to withstand earthquakes like they are in say California...

Thanks for the chuckle though... :)

It woke me up here in Downers Grove (suburb directly west of Chicago). I'm on the 4th (top) floor of a condo building that rocked and rolled for about half a minute.

Then it sounded like a couple of huge metal balls were rolling across the roof over my head. I got out of the bedroom quickly and am now in another room typing.

The weight of the enormous amount of snow on our building's flat roof plus a hugh HVAC unit directly overhead is giving me pause.

The epicenter appears to be about 35 miles directly west of me.

Need some coffee, quick. Yikes!

Glad you’re OK, Leni. I didn’t realize you lived in the Chicago Suburbs — I grew up in the NW Suburbs (Arlington Hts.).

That’s good to know... I forgot exactly how far Sycamore is from DeKalb? I just remember that it’s on the way there. We marched in their Pumpkin Festival Parade during my freshman year (I was on Poms). Plus we stayed there when visiting friends at Northern a few times... :)
