Luxury hotel bookings have declined across the United States following the so-called "AIG effect".
The term refers to the bad publicity surrounding insurance giant AIG's decision to fly executives to another resort in California after being offered bail-out money by the US government.
A Ritz-Carlton spokeswoman, Vivian Deuschl, said: "The whole demonisation of luxury meetings and companies pulling back on having their high-end meetings in luxury hotels – this has had a tremendous impact on Las Vegas.
"I can't think of another destination that has had to defend itself more against comments from politicians."

You'll also note, that a google search show Local Las vegas media covering this, and foriegn newspapers, but almost no U.S. papers are covering this.
Man, if someone had said that under Bush, it would be the lead story on all 3 networks tonite, with breaking hourly updates!!
I’m glad Obama is getting the blame, but building a luxury hotel with no casino 17 miles from the Las Vegas strip is just nuts.

Yup. This is a BIG deal. I had a meeting at a Ritz Carlton last year. The hotels are very nice and run well. I cannot believe they will just mothball a whole huge hotel. Unreal.

Amen. I stayed at the Hyatt (will not again due to Pritzker/Obama connection) and told them NO to USA Today. I think I saved 75 cents on the bill but who wants to trip over it. Grabbed a WSJ from the stack in the lobby but Murdoch ruined that paper plus WSJ was always open-borders so I don’t miss it.
I laugh when I fly on planes and see people reading USA Today. It is probably written for a 5th grade reader with lots of pictures. Newspapers in general are trash. The only good ones who are not CFR, Bilderberger, etc is Investors Business Daily (IBD), UK Telegraph and UK Daily Mail.
IBD is owned by Wm O’Neil and the Brit papers are run by the Barclay brothers. All good guys.
