From engagement to confrontation with Iran
BBC News ^ | February 11, 2010 | Barbara Plett

Statements out of Washington and other Western capitals suggest a shift from engagement to confrontation with Iran over its nuclear programme.

"What we are going to be working on over the next several weeks is developing a significant regime of sanctions that will indicate to them how isolated they are from the international community as a whole," President Barack Obama told journalists earlier this week.

The president sounded not unlike his predecessor George W Bush, who worked for years to contain Iran, a sign that Mr Obama's policy to engage with the Islamic Republic has failed.

The question now is whether a new round of sanctions would be any more successful than those imposed under Mr Bush's watch.

>>>”chinese antiriot cars were deployed today in front of evin prison #iranelection thank you china”

China is a very BIG problem, particularly the “newly-rich” (nouveau-riche) Chinese, who have in recent yrs seen their economy opened to Capitalist “economic” system. Yet their govt remains a Solid Dictatorship.

These “newly-rich” stratum in the chinese society, mostly, are appeasers of their dictatorial Chinese regime - obviously because of their new found fortunes, wanting to maintain the status quo in China. In fact, they seem more Capitalist than most other so-called countries. They won’t care who lives or dies in the process.

This is extremely bad news for the U.S., Israel, and most Western countries, as well as most Arab countries.

Sanctions for Iran seem dubious at present & chances are high they will NOT work.

To me, it is obvious that we are seeing the beginning of a very dangerous & GLOBAL mayhem initiated by the Chinese & the Iranian Government ...

After Basiji attacked the honking cars, they cont. their support for those on foot by turing on their lights!

Clashes continue in Aryashahr and Sadeghiyeh district, north of Azadi Square

people are planning to gather in the main squares at 16:00 (Tehran time)

Tehran little info - greens not able 2 reach Azadi sq, Evin,TVstation - if groups larger, regime forces extr violent

@fahimn Reports of many injuries in Esfahan

clashes in Ashrafi Esfahani, Sadeqye, North side of Azadi Sq, also in Vesal St & Hafte Tir Sq

@manic77 : Unbelievable violence by Basij and Plainclothes, they’re beating ppl w/ chains, Cables, tear gases

protesters, ANYTHING can b used as defense weapon. Stay out of reach. Try chains, brooms, hairspray. Even keys, held pointed.

CNN reporting there were ‘no significant disruptions’ today in Tehran (!)

PLEASE STAY in crowds, safety in numbers, basiji picking people off who get separated in Tehran

Protests, clashes, murder and so on will continue in Iran. But, I seriously doubt much will be accomplished by *Iranian Opposition* alone (I am not simply referring to Moussavi or Karroubi’s supporters).

What will make a serious difference is when certain *other* nations will pull together and stand up to Khamenei, AN and their ilks [IRI].

This will happen in time, but it can’t be Israel alone. By the looks of it, it will definitely take more than Israel & the U.S. to get the job done, quickly & effectively.

it’s cloudy in Tehran today - any video that shows blue sky is old

Suggested Tactic : Do not begin chanting slogans until your group exceeds 100 members

Karoubi’s son confirms to CNN his father was attacked. Doctor treating him for tear gas burns to his eyes

basij gathered in mosques near Freedom square waiting for call to be deployed

Dip cloth in vinegar, bind it infront of your face and nose, it helps against tear gas

“I’d wager that those alleged limited airstrikes on Iranian nuke facilities” are not in the cards.”

That would be a shrewd bet [but not for the entire farm].

I would imagine that a strike would have occurred prior to midnight Iranian time.
