A leading health economist fears President Obama's upcoming healthcare summit will feature more political theater than bipartisan healthcare solutions. President Obama has invited House Republicans to take part in a televised healthcare summit later this month. However, he has indicated his unwillingness to drop his promotion of the current House and Senate healthcare bills that remain unpopular with most Americans. Dr. Devon Herrick, a health economist and senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA), says the biggest mistake President Obama and congressional Democrats made from the onset of the healthcare debate was not including Republicans in the process. "When the Democratic leadership failed to get everything they and their public health advocates were wanting, then they stopped and [said], 'Well, maybe we should include the Republicans,'" Herrick notes -- then asks: "Well, why did it take a year?" The health economist believes Democrats and Republicans should be able to find common ground on some healthcare solutions. "I think portability is really the key, and that's the type of insurance people most need because they change jobs routinely or they enter and leave the labor market," he explains. "Another idea that's been around for many years is the idea of allowing health insurance to be sold across state lines. [Republican] Representative [John] Shadegg from Arizona proposed this a few years back." Herrick argues lawmakers should be discussing innovative solutions that will help Americans get the healthcare coverage they need, instead of trying to force their ideological preferences on the citizenry.

Our “leaders” (if you can call them that) should turn the tables and say Republicans have ideas to fix all these problems but it the Dems expect bi-partisanship, the Dems need to be listening. So far, there’s no sign of them listening.
