The New York resident changed his religion some 40 years ago.
Carmichael, who was flying to Doha in a Qatar Airways flight, is being questioned by security agencies and the American Mission had been informed about the same, sources said.
The New York resident had arrived in India for the first time a fortnight ago on a tourist visa and travelled to various parts of the national capital.
Carmichael, who has a tourist visa to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, came here from Pakistan.
He had visited Pakistan and Bangladesh on earlier occasions also."

A 61-year-old American national, identified as Winston Marshal Carmichael, was detained at the Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi on late on Wednesday night minutes before he was to board a Qatar-bound flight after a knife was found in his hand baggage.

SNIPPET: “Subsequent inquiries with the NYPD have revealed that Carmicheal, a convert to Islam, has earlier being charged with dug related offences and some petty crimes in the States and some discrepancies in his Indian visa application but no terror connection has been unearthed.
Government sources said that the CISF at IGIA detained Carmicheal as he could not provide satisfactory answers to queries on why he was carrying the blade. His past record has revealed that he had travelled to Pakistan and then flown to Bangladesh before coming to India. He crossed into India from Haridaspur border on Indo-Bangladesh border.”

SNIPPET: “The police refused to comment on whether Marshall was linked to any terror suspect.
‘He is in custody of FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) and has been sent to Lampur detention centre. Intelligence Bureau has already interrogated him. The US embassy has been informed about him,’ a senior police officer told IANS.
‘The police has found irregularities in his travel related documents. However, no FIR (first information report) has been registered against him till now for carrying a knife. A complete inquiry is being conducted in the matter,’ the officer added.”

Sources said Marshall came to India on October 7, 2009 from the US. He went to Pakistan on October 12 by road through the Wagah border. In Pakistan, Marshall visited Lahore, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Islamabad. He then moved to Dhaka on January 7.
Sources said Marshall visited Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami camps in Bangladesh and met its leaders. On January 27, he returned to India illegally through the Banphool border checkpost.
In Delhi, Marshall was staying in Nizammuddin. This was his fifth trip to India. His passport number is ....”
