President Obama wins showdown with GOP

The Senate confirmed a huge group of administration nominees on Thursday, following a tense exchange between President Barack Obama and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

At a White House meeting with bipartisan congressional leaders on Tuesday, Obama warned that he would make recess appointments if the logjam over nominees wasn’t broken before the Senate left for the Presidents’ Day break.

“Mitch, this is unprecedented,” the president said, gesturing forcefully on the Cabinet Room table, according to aides. “If you don’t move any, I’m going to do some [recess] appointments.”

The 27 confirmations mean no recess appointments will be needed during this break, top administration officials said. Recess appointments, which a president can make when Congress is not in session, are temporary and generally last to the end of the year.

Some people just want to make everything into a "macho-macho" deal or something. They were going in regardless of what anyone did.

Which is fine...but if Obama appoints them during the recess and the appointees then step on their own @#$%, the GOP case is much stronger when they say, "This is why we opposed them."

Now the Dems can claim that the Republicans did nothing to stop the process if they felt the nominee was so bad. Right now, every fight is worth fighting where this administration is concerned.

Weren’t there many dozens of judicial appointments that were never filled under Bush?

There were a lot of them. Somewhere around 40 or so.

I have learned that you pick the fights that you can win. What happens if you pick all fights even the ones you are going to lose (and I know some people like that) you get a reputation as losing fights. And that means you get more fights that come your way on account of the fact that you lose a lot. You get pushed harder now, by all opponents.

But, if you pick fights you win and you get that reputation, then when you oppose something, it will be remembered that you win your fights...

And in this case, when it's automatic that these guys will be installed during the recess, it's a fight (if you choose to make it so) that you will lose with hardly any effort on the opposing side.

These appointees all serve at the pleasure of the President, don’t they? So they can be replaced when Sarah becomes President in 2012?

Good POV, have to agree. I guess I'm just tired of the "progressive baby steps" ... just "one more inch" ... see that wasn't bad ... lets go another inch. Next thing you know, after an inch at a time, you are in LEFT field wishing you were in RIGHT field! The Patriot's Flag - Taking back the baby steps!

I would like to think so. I know that there are certain positions that can be replaced with an incoming President, like Clinton did with U.S. Attorneys; he fired 93 of them at one time.

I'm not absolutely sure if all appointments are immediately replaceable at the beginning of a new President's term. I would have to research that one, to make sure, before saying so. But, I tend to think so.

And yes, Go Sarah Palin! :-)

Did Mitch assume the usual GOP “leadership” position when he caved? You know, bent over, hands gripping the ankles...

Recess appointments are good until end of current Congress, Jan 2011.

These appts are all more minor ones.

Zero had to to something to seem more important than Mitch because a really big nominee, his labor guy, got deep-sixed yesterday by the Senate. Mitch won the bigger fight.

Unprecedented? The correct response — “You Lie!” Obama is just a liar.
