I never thought I’d see the day the Freepers were banding together to call for government spending. Can anyone tell me where taxing citizens for space research is cited in the Constitution?

NASA is a little different because it is our nation pulling resources together in ways not possible to reach for the stars and assure American and free peoples dictate the course of human history.

It’s as stategic a national effort as the US Marines.

That is why you see so many Freepers champion NASA human spaceflight and returning Americans to the moon and then beyond.

Well, we had better fund it or we will look up one day to see that the Chinese owns space and all that entails. I sure am glad you were not around when this country started space exploration. Do you know how many products we use in everyday life is due to space exploration and that includes medical products? Look it up. I did and was simply amazed.

A lot of things aren't. Purchasing aircraft, or doing research to build better ones, for example. No mention in there that I can find of using tax dollars to purchase automobiles, trucks, or jeeps. Nothing at all about buying computers. There is nothing I can find in the Constitution that specifically authorized the conduct of research using public funds that led to the development of the electronic computer. Better give those up, too, and go back to manual bookkeeping, that's what The Framers used. Forget about tanks, submarines, battleships, aircraft carriers. Those aren't cited, either.

Point is, there are legitimate Constitutional issues out there, but this isn't one of them. Reasonable people can debate what is or isn't a good use of public funds, but making *everything* that we don't like into a Constitutional issue really isn't a terribly productive argument.

Agree. I live in Huntsville and I know just how much the space dollars have ment here over the years. It also has had the effect of concentrating a large group of engineers of all professions in this little town, with the resulting high tech jobs. However, when push comes to shove, where do we as Americans want to spend our tax dollars? And just how much in taxes do we want to pay when times are tough?
Disclaimer: I do not rely on NASA for my income.

LOL What hole did you crawl out of? better yet, how old are you?

Nasa may have lost its way but in its day

it did more to inspire a generation than you could possibly ever appreciate.

that it pisses money away on climate research is not the agency’s fault.

I’d prefer they build killer satellites and such too.. but.. we don’t want a space war, do we?

the Constitution gives congress the power to “To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts”
That’s why we’re for space research, DARPA and lots of other science funding. However, it is wrong for it to be used as another makework or welfare program.
