In New York, a new kind of Hebrew school is born

On a recent Monday morning in southern Brooklyn, 20 kindergarteners sat on a rug, staring up at a photo of President Obama.

Their teacher, Nitzan Graham, asked them, in Hebrew, to identify the parts of Obama's face, and the children were ecstatic, yelling out the Hebrew words for "nose" and "mouth." When the ruckus had died down, Graham asked Jasmine, a 5-year-old African-American girl with pigtails, to stand up. "What are these?" the teacher asked, pointing to Obama's eyes. "Ena'im!" the girl said gleefully.

It's a typical morning at the Hebrew Language Academy, a charter school mostly funded by the state of New York. Its dual-language program is among the first of its kind, making the four-month-old school a showcase for others interested in using it as a model.

In Los Angeles, there are Spanish immersion schools for non-Spanish speakers. It appears that the students who attend these schools are more academically successful, on the whole. This is an argument for students learning more than one language, not one language in particular. Although, I think Latin is the best language for a student to learn as it provides a foundation for learning many other languages and provides a better understanding of the epistemology of many English words.

You are who you are, and you are exactly as G-d designed you.

I personally would not second guess Him. He apparently wanted a Catholic. Sounds OK to me.

"There may be some who might think: 'Why involve him in Jewish culture? Won't you be robbing the child of his own identity?'" said Deborah Harte, a co-president of HLA's parent organization whose son, Brandon Latortue, is in first grade. "But the Jewish culture and the black struggles parallel each other. I don't think our histories are so far apart that it would be difficult for him to empathize with what he was learning."

This has always bugged me. The Jews were in Egypt for a grand total of 210 years, from the time they entered under Joseph until the Exodus, and only part of that time was spent in slavery, and because of this and medieval oppression Jews and Blacks allegedly have a connection that Jews and rednecks do not.

What happened to the conquest of Canaan and the extermination of its "indigenous" people? What about the Temple and animal sacrifices? What about holy wars of conquest? What about creating a society where worship of any other "gxd" was forbidden and, under certain conditions, a capital offense?

But no. Jews never did any of these things. This is "redneck mythology." Jews were slaves in Egypt and oppressed during the Middle Ages, and that's all there is to it.

Nope . . . nothing in common with those awful "rednecks!"

There are many problems here. Either one believes the history of the Torah is true, or one does not.

If the Jews conquered Canaan, did God reveal himself at the foot of Mt. Sinai to them all as well?

Exactly! I don't know if you misunderstood my post, but it was merely objecting to the reduction of Jewish history to Egyptian slavery and medieval chr*stian oppression and skipping over all the politically incorrect stuff.

I’m reading a book called “The Avengers” which is about fighters in the Jewish ghettos in WW2. The ghetto where they lived was run by Jews. Germans would not enter a ghetto because they thought it was bad for their health. If the Germans needed workers(slaves), they asked the Jewish officials to provide them which the Jewish officials obliged. The Jewish officials always cooperated with the Germans in hopes that the ghetto would be spared. In the end, the Germans took workers until it reduced the ghettos to a few people, shot the officials and cleaned out the few remaining people.

The Jewish partisans become very frustrated with the officials. The officials even tried to destroy the partisans who were trying to save them.

Jews were slaves in Egypt and oppressed during the Middle Ages, that's all there is to it.

The history of oppression of the Jews in various countries around the world did not begin nor end in the Middle Ages. There was in particular a big problem called Nazi Germany. And oppression of Jews continued after that in the Soviet Union and its satellites and in Islamic countries, and continues in places like Venezuela and Cuba to this day.

Of course, no one would deny that "the Jewish culture" and "the black struggle" have vast historical and geographic differences. This black parent's knowledge of Jewish and black history is probably limited. I don't see why she would want to send her child to a Hebrew immersion school unless she wanted him to live in Israel, or convert to Judaism, or perhaps merely to have an environment more conducive to learning than the typical urban public school.

Unfortunately, this isn't true. Most people simply assume "the Jews were oppressed, the Blacks were oppressed, therefore both are naturally at home on the Left allied with homosexuals and other groups oppressed by the Tyrant In The Sky."

Am I the only person in the world whose Bible has a Book of Joshua in it? Helloo! Invading a country because G-d said to? Killing the heathen?????

Gad! Only Me'ir Kahana' (zt"l, Hy"d) and (lehavdil) 'Abba' 'Achime'ir seem to have gotten it!

I’m not a Jew but have spent my entire long life in areas with fairly high Jewish populations.

I have been pro-Israel since it’s founding, and always will be.

You are not alone.

First I agree there is no reason for a picture of Obamo to be the focus of any class...certainly not in how this teacher was “indoctrinating” this kids. So lets see then..the teacher taking it upon her/himself to do this? If I was the parent of one of these kids I’d be in that teachers face as well as the school admin.

“The history of oppression of the Jews in various countries around the world did not begin nor end in the Middle Ages”

I also seem to recall a rather unpleasant interlude in what is now Iraq.

Romans weren’t great, either.

Go to a Chabad.

Make sure the one you go to aren’t closet messianics (for Schneerson, not Jesus).

Some things are not our place.

No one needs to be a Jewish person, but a Jewish person, to be right with G-d.

You are confusing two completely different concepts. Only Jews are to observe the Torah, but there is a true religion for non-Jews as well. It is the duty of all non-Jews to observe the Noachide Laws.

There is a dispute as to whether or not non-Jews are forbidden to believe in shittuf (such as chr*stianity), but even those authorities who hold that it is not forbidden still maintain that it is a false idea and they should be educated to reject it.

I hope you can see the difference between saying G-d wants gentiles to remain gentiles and saying that He wills that each person remain in whatever religion he was born regardless of what it is. That is a zoroastrian idea, not a Jewish one.

Absolutely. But is this Hebrew language academy a religious school? The Hebrew language can be taught in a purely secular manner, as has been done in some New York public high schools for decades without any significant constitutional controversy.

There are two schools just like that in Florida, Broward County. Ben Gamla. They are expanding from what I have read

There are a few dual language Chinese-English public schools in NYC. Chinese and non-Chinese flock to them.

In the US there a few dual language Hebrew-English public schools. As long as things are kept secular I see no problem

There are also Spanish-English schools in America where all students study both languages. Jews are just doing what others have done
