Don't Ask, Don't Tell and Don't Even Pretend to Be Fair

The media want to avoid a substantive discussion about open homosexuality in the military. Who should be formulating military social policy, trained military professionals and "boots on the ground," or political hacks and pressure groups like the Gay Lobby? In a nutshell, the Left and the MSM want to create a sense of inevitability so that open homosexuality in the military becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Dismiss supporters of current policy and ignore their arguments. Pretend they don't exist and act as though there is absolutely no problem whatsoever with gays serving as gays.

Give Bill Clinton his due: "Don't ask, don't tell" has worked very well. But now far-left pressure groups and social engineering factions are ready to experiment on the U.S. military. What this will do to the esprit de corps of the finest military force in the world doesn't concern them in the least. Let's just be PC and popular with some special interest groups and fringe factions. I'm sure Barney Frank approves!

"One issue I want to clarify concerns President Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation’s military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share."

Sincerely, W. Mitt Romney (and my five light in the loafers, sons)

What has it done to the esprit de corps of the British Army that served with us in Iraq? What has it done to the esprit de corps of the Israeli army?

My guess is that it will effect our armed forces in the same way.

DADT hasn’t worked that well. Many commanders are cowed by PC into ignoring openly homosexual behavior.

Give Bill Clinton his due: "Don't ask, don't tell"(sic) has worked very well.

Get a clue. Don't ask Don't tell(sic) isn't what was passed by Congress. US Code Title 10, Subtitle G, Section 654 was. If Slick had gotten his way, homos would be openly serving.

I didn’t know Romney said that but the fact is that “don’t ask, don’t tell” is, IMHO, a very realistic policy for troops who are often under severe stress and forced to live in close proximity. The policy also certainly allows gays to serve honorably and without harassment in the military. However, it makes one’s personal sexual proclivities an inappropriate matter while on active duty - just as one’s personal religious or political views are. Also, military life demands certain restrictions of personal self-expression that may not be justified in civilian life. The two worlds are, in that sense, very different. I think the question of military morale is being given a back seat to what is really a PC trendy movement. I think that some things should be off the table for corporate military life that may be worthy of debate in civilian life.

We saw an example of that recently when a general made excuses based on PC for the Muslim who committed the Ft. Hood massacre. By the way, Charles Krauthammer has had some good articles on how PC is adversely affecting our military.

The British and Israeli armies not only differ from each other but also from ours. The military codes and ethos can’t be compared for a multitude of sociological and structural reasons.

Two points, Romney needs to find out fast he is no longer a valid candidate for President unless he runs as a Dem. He is for Government Health care and for open gays in the military. To Liberal for me.
Second, you are absolutely correct, Don't Ask, Don't Tell, made gays behave discretely, in other words you did come back to your barracks room after a seven mile hump to find your roommate involved in a hump of his own with a buddy. Do not be fooled once gays are allowed to serve openly, it will be impossible to stop sexual activity in the barracks. Those who complain will be considered racists, homophobic or gender biased, or all three if the complaint is against a black gay female.

Yea, well Krauthammer is FOR gays serving openly in the military. Of course he never served so it is an easy call for him.

Sorry, I meant you DID NOT come back to your barracks room after a seven ....... How do you prevent two men from having sex in a male barracks room. They cannot control sex on ships, how much harder now!

Being gay is not illegal under DADT, it is the sexual acts associated with being gay. We knew who was gay, but you really need to have proof, i.e. witness activity

I think you’re absolutely correct. I havn’t myself served in the military but I have many friends, relatives and close acquaintances who have. Among them is a relative here in FL who is a full Air Force colonel. I’ve had many good meals and conversations with him and many of his fellow officers at the Officers Club. They all vehemently oppose the proposed open-gay policy but are afraid to express their views for fear of political repercussions. It’s an open secret that the PC pressure groups are muzzling them. As a conservative, I’ve never trusted Romney. In my opinion he’s too much of an opportunist and too slick in adjusting his views to the latest polls.
