Olson says he welcomes the challenge, the most serious test of his political skills since entering Congress in January 2009. The former staffer for former Sen. Phil Gramm and Sen. John Cornyn insists he's optimistic that he and other lawmakers can forge a bipartisan coalition in Congress powerful enough to reverse Obama's decision to end the moon program.
Houston-area leaders are counting on the untested Washington warrior. Cindy Harreld, head of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, says she believes that Olson and other Texas lawmakers “can work with others in Congress to stop this.”
If the former Navy pilot wins the showdown, it will be through brute political force, not persuasion.
“The battle is far from over by any means,” Olson declared. “The president doesn't get the last word. We do.”

Obama will end up losing the battle to defund the Constellation program to go with all his other losing policies in his failed presidency.

“The president’s political foes will not let this pass. The bitterness and anger that so many Americans feel over the end (or the proposed end) of Moon program will only grow. This fall, as the final shuttle flights take place and the mid-term elections loom, they will pull out all the stops. In some places the rhetoric will get white hot. Constellation was an all-too-rare US Government program with deep bipartisan support. Throwing it on the ash heap is a sign of just how little this administration really values the idea of working across party lines.
Democrats who want to differentiate themselves from the president on an important symbolic issue will reject NASA’s new direction. Republicans will emphasize the death of a uniquely American vision. If the administration now tries to subordinate the US civil space program to an international collective of some sort, it will simply reinforce the perception that Barack Obama is a “post-American” leader.
NASA’s leaders may say that they are committed to sending explorers beyond low Earth orbit, but since they are trying to kill the one program that was actually building systems capable of doing so, their credibility is, shall we say, imperfect. Spending a few billion on “technology development” programs is not going to do anything to spread human civilization into the solar system. Here is a list of six reasons why the United States should make it a national goal to establish a laboratory on the moon, similar to our Antarctic South Pole Station:
1. National prestige. Many decisions are made in other countries based on how they perceive us . Are we young and dynamic and growing or are we old, lethargic, and dying? If we are considered the latter, we will be attacked in both overt and subtle ways.
2. Growing our economy based on technological and scientific leadership. If we accomplish great engineering and scientific tasks, such as going to the moon and staying there, we will attract the best and brightest minds in the world to not only help us on the moon but to keep us advancing in all technologies. This equals a dynamic, nimble, robust, long-term economy.
3. Teaching our young people how to succeed. Anytime a great technological project is taken on by the United States with clear purpose, resolve, and defined goals, the result is success which inspires all Americans, especially our youth.
4. Energy. Space is awash in energy resources. The moon is a place to take advantage of that.
5. Fighting terrorism. To stop the ideology of terror from taking hold in young minds, we must provide those minds with a grand new perception of the universe. Imagine a young person stepping outside a mud hut and looking up at the moon and knowing there are people there accomplishing great tasks. His heart will soar and he will want to join us, not them.
6. The X Factor. What we don’t know, we don’t know. The moon holds secrets, perhaps to our very survival.

Hey, I’m all for mining the moon. We should have claimed it as US territory when we first landed. The problem is we will pay all the money to make all this happen, and then we will share the wealth with everyone else. You watch.
Like I stated in a previous post of the same subject, Obama will NOT get away with shutting down our Space Program. It is a matter of National Pride as well as technological and ecomomic growth, not to mention National Security. Obama is a fool with an idiot’s agenda. Let’s shut the Obamanoid down....
As a former contractor at the JSC, I’m going to jump in on this issue on the opposite side:
In this one instance, the policy that Zero has announced is actually pretty good.
NASA’s Constellation Aries/Orion project was a DOG - and should never have been approved. Essentially, it was designed to keep the ~40,000 Shuttle program jobs active while pursuing the slowest and most expensive moon program possible. It would have probably have taken two decades to put astronauts on the moon again, at a cost of hundreds of billions. From a political and $$$ perspecive, it never had a real chance of getting Americans back on the moon - only of keeping the gravy train running for a couple more administrations.
However, I doubt that Zero has the political will to follow through with this plan. Cutting the NASA pork to powerful Congressional districts will provoke a huge backlash, and I expect he will cave.

Careful - there are numerous anti-NASA trolls haunting FR. The bean-counter type you replied to is just one of several types. Just keep in mind that killing NASA has long been an unwritten plank in the Democrate party - J. Edwards campained on doing just that.
