"Extra" has confirmed that Jay Leno's longtime bandleader and sidekick, Kevin Eubanks, is leaving "The Tonight Show," as first reported by Lisa Stanley on K-EARTH 101.
A source tells "Extra" Eubanks "wanted a change" and decided to leave the show, adding that Eubanks wanted to pursue other opportunities. Another source says he will appear on the debut of the revamped "Tonight Show" when it returns on March 1.
In 1992, Eubanks joined "The Tonight Show" band, becoming bandleader two years later. Before he joined the show, Eubanks released numerous albums.
Eubanks was also bandleader on "The Jay Leno Show."

Gonna miss ole Kev...

Was he tired of being Jay’s laugh track? Or did NBC recruit someone else to liven things up?

I won’t miss him too much, especially with the Obama crap/ bling-bling he’d always wear. It became tiresome and predicatable. (i.e. We get it already, you’re black, Obama’s black; you’re a hipster musician, Obama’s a hep cat, etc.)

Maybe he got tired of the politics in television.
I really like Eubanks and will miss him when he’s gone.

Despite his lousy politics, I’d still treasure the occasion to sit down and jam with him while playing my Fender Rhodes.

Maybe Branford Marsalis will come back? He was the original Jay Leno Tonight Show bandleader, who also left to pursue other things. His roots were in jazz and he wanted to go back there.

He made his 50 million. I never cared about him one way or the other.

Doc Severinson is now 83-years-old and currently lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico with his wife, Emily. As of 2009 he is still performing on a regular basis in a local restaurant there.
I'm not sure he would want the daily grind of a TV show at his age.

At the risk of being an old fogey (go ahead shoot me) I haven't watched much of the Tonight Show since Jack Paar ran it!

Must have enough to retire on, because he won’t make more on another gig IMO.

Maybe Kevin Eubanks will return to his jazz/fusion roots. I found his albums very very good and nothing like the boring band leader tripe he played on Jay Leno. Sounds like he played the same music every night on Leno. I got tired of him once he became band leader for him. Check out his excellent albums Opening Night and Sundance.
