Jim Gibbons Claims Constitution Gives Federal Power to Run Education

FUNK: GIBBONS SHOULD EXPLAIN WHERE CONSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY EXISTS FOR FEDS TO “BE IN CHARGE OF EDUCATION”

ALTOONA – David Funk, a Republican candidate for Congress in Iowa’s Third District, today called on one of his primary opponents to clarify comments stating the federal government has the constitutional authority to control local schools.

In an interview with the political blog Caffeinated Thoughts, Jim Gibbons of Perry said, “It’s fine for me where the Constitution says that the federal government should be in charge of education. Now, I understand testing, benchmarks and standards. But, a lot of that can be accomplished at the state level. … It appears we’ve got some sort of a brain drain going on but those things mostly have to be attacked at the state level and at the local level. Bigger is not necessarily better.”

Funk, a retired military and Northwest Airlines pilot, said he would “like to know what constitution Jim Gibbons is looking at when he says that.”

“Not only is he wrong about the U.S. Constitution, but he’s drastically out of step with Republicans and, for that matter, most Iowans about the federal role in education.

We’ve long recognized that local districts should control education. States have a legitimate role in the process, but the federal government has clearly overstepped its bounds by trying to dictate standards from Washington, D.C.,” Funk said. “It’s troubling that we have a candidate in this primary who is more aligned with the education philosophy of Leonard Boswell and Nancy Pelosi than with common-sense Iowans.”

Funk expressed concerned that Gibbons’ comments reflect “a sense of confusion” about the issue. Funk said his core philosophy on education is clear.

“The federal government has no business sticking its nose in the local classroom – and we don’t need anyone in Congress who thinks it has the authority to do so. This issue is managed best at the local level by local school boards. School choice and home schooling should be available to all of our citizens. With the reintroduction of competition, we can fix our broken public school system,” he said.

I think the basic cause of today's widespread sense of dismay and disillusionment at all things educational at the Federal level is a reflection of the equally widespread desire to fix America by returning to it's roots.

Any thinking parent or student with more than 2 brain cells to rub together realizes we've strayed far off the road that defines what America was, is, and hopefully can be. The perception that we can attain a measure of this returning to roots is becoming increasingly widespread and popular, and it's implementation can best be attained by removing and eliminating those social structures that have been deemed to have gotten in the way, by whatever mode and method, or are perceived as being inimical to America's best interest by dint of their long-standing anti-American values, such as they are. Values that have more or less been shoved down America's collective throat.

There is abundant evidence that Federal education's decades-long agenda fits this bill.

Compounding the problem for the educationalists is the fact we have entered a time in our nation's history where the sheen of everything Federal is wearing off and dimming with the average American. We are no longer in awe of the High Machinations of Olympian Government. Evidence supporting this abounds; I give you the very fact that people today, at all levels, are attempting to roll back the Leviathan. At all levels! Disaffection runs rampant through the land.

Will Sarah eliminate the Department of Education? We can only hope. Will a compliant Congress, finally filled with a Conservative majority elected on the wings of an enraged electorate, dismantle large portions of the Gluttonous Monster Who's Appetite Can Never Be Sated? Again, we can only hope.

Against this backdrop, we also face another Enemy in the making, the courts. Was Obama’s overt and malicious criticism of the Supreme Court, shown to be factually in error, a means of quieting the courts until such time as he could take effective full control of that branch of government? Who knows? But for sure, the man has ulterior motives in this arena, and plans must be made on how to deal with it.

But the basic desire expressed here is the desire to return to our roots. This is an important shift in the American consciousness. It must be encouraged, nurtured, and defended by any and all means, not the least of which is to make the telling of the story of America as pleasing and easy to digest by all levels of what passes for educational attainment today, so that in spite of years - decades - of left wing propaganda and indoctrination the story gets told - and accepted - by many more millions of the young (and not so young) historically functional illiterates the educational system has foisted off on this country.

Education - real education - is the key here, and it must start now!
