This is the volcano that dumped ash all over Eastern Washington and also dumped ash over Portland, Oregon, a couple of times, back in 1980...

Will Gaia be pleased or must we still pay for our collective sins with global warming?

A very sad story. Saw his Father on ‘youtube’ interview. A nice family; a good guy. . .and a death that has a ‘primordial fear’ spectre to it.

It probably would’ve been an awesome picture if the ledge didn’t give way.

I've been on the mountain in winter, you step off a trail and you can easily be neck high in powder. I am surprised he was even found at all unless the crater bowl is iced over.

Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to take off all your emergency gear and warm clothing before perching on the edge of a volcano to take a picture. But I guess when you do something 68 times you get slightly cocky.

Joe versus the volcano? A different outcome, sadly.

Hmmmmm....We climbed to the top of the rim in about 1990/91 during early summer...sat near the rim eating lunch....climbing in winter...I don’t think is such a great idea....didn’t know you had to have a permit now.

That’ll do it. Hikers should take note: avoid falling into volcanoes.

Back in the early spring 1990’s I was up about 11,000’ on Sargents Ridge Mt Shasta. I slipped and went down a sheet of ice for about 1200’ before I got into some softer ice and could slow down. I must have been doing at least 65 mph on that ice and those rock out-croppings were coming up fast.

Cornices are unstable and prone to sudden failure. Extreme caution is advised! Do not approach the crater rim unless you can find a wind-scoured area where the surface of the rim is visible. The crater rim is unstable and is subject to frequent rockfall and collapse. Stay back from the crater edge, it is potentially hazardous at any time of year (especially during the period of elevated avalanche danger and rockfall during the spring thaw).
