JOE BIDEN RIDICULED FOR WEARING ASHES
Catholic League ^ | 021710 | Bill Donohue

Posted on 02/17/2010 2:24:51 PM PST by Fred

Fox News analyst Bob Beckel today criticized Vice President Joe Biden for wearing ashes on TV; today is Ash Wednesday and Biden is Catholic.

In the middle of a discussion on President Obama’s stimulus plan, Beckel gratuitously said, “Sorry about laughing, but I looked at Joe Biden’s forehead, and I know it is Ash Wednesday, but I’m not sure I would wear that ash on the air. Anyway….”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue wasn’t amused:

Bob Beckel’s admonishing remark, “I’m not sure I would wear that ash on the air,” makes us wonder whether it is the public display of ashes he finds risible, or the religion that sports them.

In any event, there is no record of Beckel ever lecturing a Jew about wearing a yarmulke on TV or a Muslim wearing a turban. Must be something about Catholicism that bothers this guy. We’d love to know what it is. At the very least, a clarification about what he meant is in order.

Absolutely. He is entitled to wear his ashes as are the rest of us Christians. Maybe beckle should make fun on TV of others and see how far he gets.

I am a Lutheran (Missouri Synod) and am wearing my ashes right now. We had a full Divine Service (with Holy Communion) at noon after Bible Class at 11:00 followed by a nice lunch afterward.

Some people receive a heavier dose than others. Depends on the pressure of the Priest administering ashes.

I saw that, too. I told Mr. Inspectorette that Beckel looked like he was totally smashed. He couldn’t even sit up straight - he was leaning so far to the right (not politically, obviously) that I thought he was going to fall off his chair.

Beckel needs to educate himself!

The priest can say one of two things.

“Remember, man, thou art dust and unto dust thou shall return.”

Or

“Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.”

I think both would be appropriate for Beckel. LOL!

Biden having ashes on his forehead is between he and God.. He will answer to the Supreme Being and it is not for us to criticize. When will we realize that it is not us to judge but for God to Judge. Amen. JM

1. He was wearing them as a show of false piety.

You always have to wonder when a politician chooses Ash Wednesday to appear on TV wearing ashes. That's what I wondered about Rick Santorum. Even if they are genuinely pious, they have to know that they are also making a type of political statement.

BTW not only Catholics observe Ash Wednesday.

Beckel’s such an ashhole I’m sure he meant it as a swipe against Catholics.

All the good politicians of Mormon persuasion wear very thin see through white shirts. Harry Reid too. And they too need to make a religious statement to the true believers. After all how would we know if they are TBM’s?

Didn’t you notice that about the Mittster?

Smile!

Yeah. Some of the older men I knew wore the ‘wife beater’ with sleeves style and those were easier to spot than the regular crew neck ones, so now I just try to check the legs.

Women are easy to tell, the bulkiness under the bra.

My brother and I were in a bar in Tijuana. Way back in 1964 before you were born. A hooker came to our table and sat down and started rubbing his leg. Imagine her surprise when she discovered the specialness there.

LOL.

LOL. I had a friend (temple attender) who was excommunicated and I didn’t quite know how to bring up asking him if he had re-joined so I sat down next to him and gently during the conversation put my hand on his leg about where the garment line would be to see if he was wearing them. He was.

Same brother who was a Bishop in Las Vegas and is now a HC guy here in southern Utah has a TBM wife who always does a garment check on me. I always tell her I’m wearing the new version from Fruit of the Loom.
