What Sarah Palin Doesn't Know
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 02-17-10 | DOROTHY RABINOWITZ

Posted on 02/17/2010 6:11:12 PM PST by GOP_Lady

Her obsession with the politics of grievance puts her at odds with Ronald Reagan.

From the day she turned heads at the 2008 Republican Convention—becoming at once an object of fevered controversy—one truth about Sarah Palin stood clear: She was fortunate in her antagonists.

Those in the media, especially, would stoke a mighty sympathy backlash on her behalf. That resentment would feed nicely into the candidate's role as a voice for the aggrieved: those regular citizens under the heel of the "elites"—that immense, tentacled power whose depredations she has been describing to audiences since her star turn on the McCain ticket.

She showed resilience and not a little backbone throughout, bouncing back after a hapless on-air encounter with CBS's Katie Couric. And after a daunting encounter with ABC's Charles Gibson—a civilized presence and one of the most genial of men ever to occupy a news anchor's chair—now turned into an oaf unable to conceal disdain as he questioned his guest on her capacities for office. That was, to be sure, a pale echo of other spectacles. CNN's Campbell Brown rocketed, nightly, to impressive levels of semi-hysteria on the subject of Mrs. Palin and her incapacities.

If she’s looking for or amenable to constructive criticism (as I hope she is), she should be reading what someone else has to say who is better able to identify a point and elucidate a position that the writer of this article.

Criticizing her over speaking out against elites is not constructive and the tone of the article was not constructive. Elitist are the problem with Washington and if Republicans refuse to accept that fact they will not hold any new found power longer than two election cycles. The problem is that many people think elitism is lower middle-class against upper-class people, but that is not true. Elitism rears its ugly head at every level of government. When I hear Sarah speak out against elitism I know she is speaking out against Washington elites, but I also know that she is speaking out against the style of elites who wanted to regulate barber poles in her home town. Sarah’s rhetoric is good and that is why the author disagrees with it.

Elitists such as Dorothy Rabinowitz and Peggy Noonan are terrified that the common folk are going to take back America and send the socialists packing.

I understand what you mean.

I had to reread the main paragraphs a few times in order to really understand the author’s point.

Liberalism is the problem, not elitism. There’s no room for class envy in the conservative movement.

Along with liberalism and socialism, the problem is intellectual elitism of “the ruling class”, not economic elistism. And Dorothy Rabinowitz and Peggy Noonan are terrified that their days as intellectual elistists are coming to an end.

yes but most of the elites are socialist.

what is socialism but the attempt to keep the peasants inline. with the privileged few running the levers of power. Liberalism/socialism is simply the new age of aristocracy

This is an odd article.

The syntax is uneven and I can't figure out exactly what Dorothy's main beefs are. What comes across is a tone of sneering, but the reasons are unclear.

And what is it she has against Sarah's policy briefings?

Asked about her endorsement of this candidate, Mrs. Palin informed Mr. Wallace she was proud of her choice. She admired Rand Paul's domestic policies, not of course that she agreed with everything he stood for. It does not, apparently, occur to her that everything he stands for—and can vote on—is precisely what comes into play when, and if, he becomes a senator with her help.

What??

Rabinowitz twists Palin's words.

Just because Sarah doesn't agree with everything that Paul stands for, doesn't mean that Sarah didn't consider everything Paul stands for.

Robinowitz, isn't being objective about Sarah, or simple logic doesn't "occur" to her.

Without a doubt. But Palin's references to the people with hard hats and the steel toed boots who are building this country sometimes seems to veer toward blue collar vs. white collar class envy populism.

Our founding fathers were ‘intellectual elitists.’ Anyone can become an intellectual elitist if they wanted to: turn off the TV, put down the People magazine and read a book. Be like Reagan:

“Well .. I’ve always been a voracious reader — I have read the economic views of von Mises and Hayek, and .. Bastiat .. I know about Cobden and Bright in England — and the elimination of the corn laws and so forth, the great burst of economy or prosperity for England that followed.” Ronald Reagan

Rabinowitz wrote approvingly of Republican presidential candidate John McCain in both the 2000 and 2008 U.S. presidential elections. She appears to be a Steve Schmidt conservative.
