George Will: Sarah Palin and the mutual loathing society
The Washington Post ^ | February 18, 2010 | George F. Will

Posted on 02/17/2010 8:27:21 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The Republican presidential nominee, an Arizona senator, was a maverick, which was part of his charm. He spoke and acted impulsively, which was part of his problem. Voters thought his entertaining dimensions might be incompatible with presidential responsibilities. For example, he selected a running mate most Americans had never heard of and who had negligible experience pertinent to the presidency. This was 1964.

Barry Goldwater, whose seat John McCain occupies, chose to run with Bill Miller, a congressman from Lockport, N.Y., near Buffalo. Miller, Goldwater cheerfully explained, annoyed Lyndon Johnson. After the Goldwater-Miller ticket lost 44 states, Miller retired to Lockport, where he practiced law and lived in dignified anonymity until his death in 1983. Although he had served as an assistant prosecutor of Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg and spent seven terms in Congress, no one suggested he should be considered for the 1968 Republican presidential nomination.

Yet Sarah Palin, who with 17 months remaining in her single term as Alaska's governor quit the only serious office she has ever held, is obsessively discussed as a possible candidate in 2012. Why? She is not going to be president and will not be the Republican nominee unless the party wants to lose at least 44 states.

Conservatives, who rightly respect markets as generally reliable gauges of consumer preferences, should notice that the political market is speaking clearly: The more attention Palin receives, the fewer Americans consider her presidential timber. The latest Post-ABC News poll shows that 71 percent of Americans -- including 52 percent of Republicans -- think she is not qualified to be president.(continued)

Congressman Miller is still the only Catholic on a Republican presidential ticket to this day.

None of the other R candidates will get any better, so that argument is a non starter.

Sorry, but it is. He was comparing Obama's electability with Palin's. By your logic, the comparison with Obama is equally a non-starter. Indeed comparison of Palin with any dem is a non-starter.

Sorry, the point still stands. Any R will get that trteatment from the press. You can say she’s unique in that regard all you want, it doesn’t make it true. Just ask John McCain, former darling of the press, until he bacame the R candidate that is.

It wouldn't matter what the press did. The press has been shilling for 0bama since he was inaugurated, no? The result? 0bama’s poll numbers collapsed, the Democrats lost NJ, VA, AND MA, and 0bama’s # 1 pet project, 0bamacare, has voters adamantly against it in record numbers. The press is irrelevant. The more they attack Sarah Palin, the stronger she gets. Show me how many politicians have ever sold 2 million books in just a few weeks.

So what?
Tell me, how is 0banacare doing with voters right now, despite massive support from the press for 0bama and 0bamacare. And how many books did 0bama sell despite an adoring press for 0bama, as compared to Sarah Palin. How much ratings do MSNBC and CNN have as compared to Fox, Rush, Levin, and the rest of conservative talk radio?

More like nail on your head, cause you are not making use of the brains that God gave you.
That particular canard has been discredited long ago.

I’m not sold on Palin either (although I like her moxie)—but it makes me laugh when anyone declares with certainty who will and will not be president.

He 'knows' because he lives in Washington. Us 'peasants' in flyover country just don't have a clue. /s

Plus, he's a Princeton man doncha know. :)

“As far as experience, she has more than Washington and Lincoln. I’m serious!!”

Yes, except Washington didn’t resign in the middle of the war for Independence, nor Lincoln in the Civil war, to write books and become wealthy celebrity pundits.

First Reagan and Thatcher, now you’re comparing Palin to Washington and Lincoln?

This Palin worship get’s loonier by the day.

I’m in Texas, and I know the deal. She’s not that well liked, as this poll has shown. I wish it wasn’t true, but it is.

Rubbish. The huge crowds she has drawn at Fort Hood and at her recent campaign appearances for Perry put the lie to your claim. Attendance at all the Texas candidates rallys has been rather tepid EXCEPT when Palin appeared.

BTW, there are several million other Texans who get a vote and they "know the deal" as well... /g

Look, the point is not that she will get worse treatment from the press. The point was that comparing her to Obama at this stage in his career was apples and oranges.

Oh, and lest I offend you further, Sarah rules all...

To be fair, there is awful lot to loath about George Will. I’m not certain how he even makes it into the conservative fold.

Thanks so much for the post. I will have to do some research and thinking about that, as well.
