WASHINGTON – Justice Department lawyers showed "poor judgment" but did not commit professional misconduct when they authorized CIA interrogators to use waterboarding and other harsh tactics at the height of the U.S. war on terrorism, an internal review released Friday found.

The decision closes the book on one of the major lingering investigations into the counterterrorism policies of George W. Bush's administration. President Barack Obama campaigned on abolishing the simulated drowning technique of waterboarding and other tactics that he called torture, but he left open the question of whether anyone would be punished for authorizing such methods.

An initial review by the Justice Department's internal affairs unit found that former government lawyers Jay Bybee and John Yoo had committed professional misconduct, a conclusion that could have cost them their law licenses. But the Justice Department's top career lawyer reviewed the matter and disagreed.

Thanks for the link! I read the article and have yet to figure out what poor judgement was involved. With 5,000 dead Americans at the hands of there terrorists, I would expect some harsh interrogation. There was even a time where I would have offered to do it myself.

what is their rationale for claiming they used poor judgement? DOJ showed poor judgment in wasting time on this crap.

Americans want their families safe at whatever means it takes to keep them safe. When push comes to shove, anyone that voices out "be nice" so they will leave us alone; will when posed the question what if there is overwhelming evidence that your city was in the path of a possible terrorist attack in the immediate future-the clock is ticking, when pressed on a "personal" scenario..the answer is usually do whatever it takes. Have heard it, we know it is true. Politics takes a back door..when the person asked has to outwardly say he would take a chance with his family's life at stake--he caves.

This DOJ decision will not make a difference to those who's public via media agenda is to attack the Right-Bush/Cheney. Behind locked doors, they want the same thing-their family and cohorts safe from another 9/11.
