Running against GOP establishment, Rubio, Hayworth find allies among conservative activists

Marco Rubio and J.D. Hayworth have different styles and different backgrounds, and they're from opposite sides of the country. But both are hoping to win Senate seats by tapping into the energy of conservatives to defeat big-name, establishment-backed Republicans.

Hayworth repeatedly and directly attacked McCain for working with Democrats on issues like immigration and campaign finance reform.

"If you want to see how politicians undergo campaign-year conversions, you've got my friend," Hayworth said before pausing. "I hate using that term, because he uses it all the time — you have my senior senator, John McCain."

Hayworth is more brash than Rubio, but he also believes there is a national movement against party establishment candidates.

"What we're seeing across the country is not anger as much as it is frustration and the feeling that there's a disconnection among the current crop of elected leaders," Hayworth said. "In much the same way that Governor Crist embraced Barack Obama, so, too, my opponent, our senior senator, has enabled President Obama to make some very unwise decisions."

Hayworth cited McCain's support for closing the prison for terrorist suspects at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and his opposition to harsh interrogation techniques that are widely considered torture.

And Hayworth questions why McCain brags about launching a "scorched earth" campaign against him.

"Arizona voters are coming up to me and saying 'Where was this against Obama in the presidential race?'" Hayworth said. "John is saving his scorn and his vitriol for a conservative. I don't think that helps him."

J.D. Hayworth, CPAC Superstar 2/19/10 9:16 AM

J.D. Hayworth, the former congressman from Arizona who announced a primary bid against Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) this month, is all over CPAC. Last night he hit the NRA’s pre-dinner reception, and spent every second pumping hands and making small talk. If people didn’t know who he was when they met him, they came away buzzing.

“He’s running against John McCain!” said one student in a pinstriped suit, reuniting with a friend after meeting Hayworth. “That’s awesome!” As they moved on, Hayworth moved on to Wayne LaPierre, president of the NRA, who said “Thank you” to Hayworth and chatted in full view of partygoers. At the dinner, Hayworth moved through the tables, talking to reporters and fans, and practically jumped out of his seat when the emcee, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), asked 2010 candidates to stand.

Let's keep it real here. Rubio is also establishment-backed.

Jeb and Huck are two establishment RINOs who back Rubio.

I used to like Charlie Crist, and normally I would have voted for him; but not anymore. It is my impression that, as Ronald Reagan used to say “I didn’t leave the Democrat party, the Democrat party left me”. So when it comes to Charlie, he “left” the Republicans, if he ever was one. I know very little about Marco Rubio, but what I know of, some is good, some not so good. I will, however, gladly vote for Mr. Rubio and I hope he wins. I, for one, and I can assure you I am not alone, cannot and will not any longer tolerate Charlie Crist. Thank you.

This is two entirely different situations. Rubio is a fresh young face who is conservative and former Speaker of the Florida House taking on Gov Crist who by most standards leaves a lot to be desired. Rubio is supported by Jeb Bush’s sons (Jeb has not formally announced but a good guess where his feelings lie), Jim DeMint, Jim Inhofe, Liz Cheney, Mary Matlin, and others who believe in Rubio.

Hayworth lost his seat in Congress because of several issues and is now taking on McCain. He has been a Congressman.

Whoever wrote this article doesn’t have a clue there is a huge difference in the two situations starting with open seat versus incumbent and should not be compared IMHO!

It’s appalling the commercials McCain has out on KFYI and other clear channels using this woman with a soft, seductive, butter won’t melt in your mouth angle while slamming JD Hayworth. JD ought to swing hard at the immigration issue which is MCShame’s weak spot (one of many!) Time to retire OLD GOAT!
