WASHINGTON Senator John McCain of Arizona, an avid boxing fan, knows the story of Joe Louis, one of the greatest heavyweight champions.
Sixty years ago, Louis, a profile in courage and character, was an American hero rising to any challenge. Then he stayed around too long and was humiliated by the younger Rocky Marciano and Ezzard Charles.
The 73-year-old Mr. McCain, another American hero, another profile in courage and character, risks the same fate by staying around too long.
Bitter over his defeat by Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential race and facing a right-wing Republican primary challenge this year, the independent maverick is no more; hes a predictable partisan who ducks controversy.

“hes a predictable partisan who ducks controversy”
Had he displayed a little bit more of that over the course of his career he just might have been President.
wow, the NYT endorse it’s favorite patsy early.
Mr. Judy Woodruff....I wondered what had happened to him.
>> wow, the NYT endorse its favorite patsy early.
If the excerpt sets the tone for the article, I would say it’s not a flattering assessment of the McCain we know.
he likes to be “roughed up” first
He can't be all that bitter, having virtually ceded the race to Obama.
McCain’s been put in the position of having to fake being conservative. No wonder the NY Slimes disapprove.
One of the sadder things in 2008 was watching the media turn on McCain once he was no longer useful to them.
He apparently never realized that the only reason they supported him in the first place was because he was a stick they could use to beat W with. That was always his role.
Once they didn’t need him for that anymore and they had their own liberal to back in Obama, they tossed him overboard.
The article got several things right, among them the fact that Lindsey has stepped in to play the Juan McCain, backstabbing RINO role in the Senate while Juan veers right in this reelection year.
And they also point out that Juan’s recent “standing in the breech” (per a misinformed Bill Bennett) to support Don’t ask, Don’t tell, was actually a flip/flop from his previous position where he said he’d support a change if recommended by the top brass.
Disgusting insect. From Navy pilot to.....THIS.
Suuuuuch a disappointment.....so FINISHED and uninspiring.
Nice face, but his daughter is a gay-loving, empty-headed PIG.
True, but which party on which particular day?
