Yeah...remember, "steroids" are a euphemism for male hormones, or androgens of which testosterone is the main one. When taken in supra-physiologic amounts (i.e., in pharmacologic doses) they can do a lot of harm, both near- and long-term.

We were just talking about how the MLB and NBA players have better collective bargaining agreements than the NFLPA does, and then talked about how, given the choice, you’re much better off as a major league baseball player than an NFL player. The average MLBer makes 4 times as much money, has twice as long a career, and lives 26 years longer than the average NFLer.

I would throw in Lenny Bias, who would have made the Celtics the team of the decade had he not gotten involved with Dancing Dust.

Funny, I forgot about Lyle Alzado. You’re right.

Also Ken Caiminiti of the Padres. Cammy officially died from cocaine and opiate use but he had an enlarged heart and coronary disease. Both are signs of widespread use of anabolic steroids.

Absolutely! The Celtics might have won at least two more titles in the 80’s if not for the Bias tragedy;and we probably would have been spared the whole Rick Pitino fiasco, too,(which set the Celtics back just as much as the Bias and Lewis tragedies,IMHO);so who can tell exactly how many more potential titles were lost from one incredibly bad decision one young man made that fateful night in June of ‘86...

A lot of the NFL players I grew up watching have met very ahrd times after retirement. Very sad.

Much worse in the NHL ... I was blessed to be in Boston during the Bobby Orr days.

You have to wonder if performance enhancing drugs didn’t affect the heart . . . .

I never played a down of football and I had my bypass at 50. You get what you get.
