FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.- A North Carolina high school student said she was willing to sacrifice her honor roll grades to avoid writing an essay contrary to her Christian beliefs.
Tieanna Trough, a student at Gray's Creek High School in Fayetteville, said her English class was instructed to write essays on making deals with the devil as part of a curriculum studying Washington Irving's short story "The Devil and Tom Walker," WTVD-TV, Durham/Raleigh, reported Tuesday.
Trough said her faith bars her from writing about deals with the devil.
"I believe you don't write about how to sell your soul to the devil," she said.
The girl's parents said they agreed with their daughter.
"We can't allow God into the classrooms, but yet they are going to allow the devil in the classroom, that's the way I felt," said her mother, Monice McLean. "They were told if they didn't do it they would get a zero."
Trough said teachers have now given her an alternate subject for her essay, how and why money is important. She said the new essay subject is acceptable.
Not to mention the Gospels.... Jesus' temptations wouldn't make sense unless you could talk about the subject. Judas' betrayal, likewise....
Aren't covenants a type of deal...?
The girl could have written an short essay without compromising her Christian beliefs. For example:
Voting for Democrats is making a deal with the devil. They permit the continuation of abortions. To quote Jesus, the devil is “The Father of Lies” and a murderer.
The End.
Well, I’m glad you got it all figured out.
Too bad she is not Muslim. They seem to bend over backwards to make sure that their beliefs are accomodated.
The libs are getting bold. My girlfriend had to write a paper on why she chooses to be heterosexual and defend herself. I would’ve been in the dean’s office screaming bloody murder before I would’ve answered the questions.

Trust me. Star Traveler has it all figured out. Final word.
In regards to the girl, she needs to get off her high horse. A strong Christian would have no problem with this assignment.
The family comes off as thin skinned nuts.
“In regards to the girl, she needs to get off her high horse. A strong Christian would have no problem with this assignment.”
I agree. AS others have stated it was a prime opportunity to show the flag, as it were, and a great way to reaffirm one’s faith to one’s self.
Also Goethe’s “Faustus” or Marlowes “The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus” just to site a few.
Far better to just remain ignorant. /sarc
Although I doubt that either of those two possibilities come close to the assignment, either could also be answered within the context of her faith and beliefs. Again, the Irving story is not about the devil as an entity but about the nature of morals and moral decisions that should not be made rashly for love or money. The devil was a classic representation of a moral dilemma and how the “devil” was outfoxed. The idea of assignments like this is to read, analyze the story and to arrive at your own interpretation of the dilemma and how you as the reader see the story and its message.
The story and the assignment have nothing to do with belief or non-belief in the devil; no more than devil’s food cake has to do with the devil.
A deal is mutual set of obligations and expectations reached after an arm’s length negotitation of equal parties. God’s covenant not to destroy the earth was unilateral. God’s covenant with Abraham was executed in such a way that it is clear God knew He would be performing both sides of the covenant.
This is the number one problem with marriage today. Men and women treat it like a deal, not a covenant, and get bitter when the other party does not perform. Jesus says love as I loved - that means selfless service, not performance with an expectation of return.
Job proves that you can live pure and upright and still you can suffer. God will have mercy on whom He has mercy. God is sovereign.

"the LOVE of money is the root of all evil"
Fixed it for ya...
FMCDH(BITS)
Interesting that it took 85 posts for somebody to “fix” it for me. I guess it is so often wrongly quoted that nobody questioned how I posted it - even on a conservative web site.
And a dumb question - what does FMCDH(BITS) stand for?
Our moniker nothingnew was my beautiful wifes idea. Any posts or replies without FMCDH, (From My Cold Dead Hands), are by her. Those with FMCDH are by me. Any activism in the Four Corners area...please flag me.FMCDH
I have updated my FMCDH (From My Cold Dead Hands) sign-off with the addition of (BITS).....Blood In The Streets, which I foresee coming soon, due to the enormous increase of the Marxist progressive movement being shoved down the throat of this failing REPUBLIC through the Judicial tyranny of fiat law, the passing of unconstitutional laws by the Legislative and Executive branches of our government and the enormous tax burden placed upon the average American to support unconstitutional programs put forth by Marxist ideology.
I do not advocate revolution. I only think of what I foresee. FMCDH(BITS)
Third Scholar: The devils whom Faustus served have torn him thus, For, 'twixt the hours of twelve and one, methought, I heard him shriek and call out for help, At which time the house seem all on fire, With Dreadful horror of these damned fiends.
