McConnell tells Reid: W.V. Senator does not want health care bill passed by 'Byrd rule'
Washington TImes - Water Cooler ^ | 2/25/10 | Kerry Picket

GOP leaders of both Houses spoke to the press on Wednesday to discuss details regarding the Thursday health care summit at Washington, D.C.'s, Blair House with Democrat leaders and President Obama. The GOP is already calling the summit useless, going as far as calling it a "Sham-Wow" TV commercial as one GOP member put it.

With the threat of reconciliation looming from the Democrats, a parliamentary procedure reserved for passing spending and tax legislation in the Senate, and the bills need only 51 votes to pass without debate, Republicans are fighting back. They are reminding everyone that it was Democrat Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia who not only authored the reconciliation rule but also objected to it being used to pass health care legislation, according to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

I would not be surprised if Byrd were against it, whether he could articulate that ~ still speak ~ is another topic.

If not for the 17th amendment, they would have been long gone.

Repeal the 17th!

I loved how Max Baucus couched his comments by announcing how much they all agree! HUH?

They agree on the problems, but they sure don't agree on how to solve them!

Seems to me that the Dems came into this with the intention of putting a happy face on it so that when they try to jam it through next week....it will make the Repubs look bad...and they'll go back to calling us "the party of no".

Even if they use reconciliation, they can't pass the Health Care Bill, it won't pass the House.

My uneducated impression of this threat of reconciliation...

The Dems are saying “We are passing this FABULOUS bill whether you like it or not, or even if some of our guys like it or not and when the American people get it, they will sooooo happy about it! So why don’t you lend your name to this so you can get credit too!”

The Dems are so out of touch with reality, they cannot comprehend, or don’t care, that they are going to LOSE with this legislation. Especially since it will further dampen the unemployment rate when people have to decide “Do I keep 45 people employed or make do with 40 that’s gonna cost me the same amount by the time I either pay a fine for not insuring them or buy their health insurance.”

And let’s not forget that only the healthy will be employable, God forbid if you were born with diabetes or something. Since the employers are penalized for YOUR handicap, YOU won’t be as necessary at their job.

This sucks all the way around.

Just another agenda item to tick off here - diminish the private sector, cause unemployment, yields more clamor to "do something" about jobs, leads to more government programs, agencies, jobs.

Rename, repackage, rewrite it a tad smaller, and sell another pig in a poke.

Tennessee has joined several other states in trying to pass a Health Care Freedom Act. NO COLAs for granny, retired Military or retired fed employees. BIG NEW fees for Tricare for Life retired over 65 Military's secondary health ins. (DOD bill already passed, delayed but goes into effect 2011)

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.)

Congress plans to block Tricare fee increases
http://www.armytimes.com/news/2009/10/military_tricarefees_blocked_100709w

By Rick Maze - Staff writer, Oct 7, 2009

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.

Snip

The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Snip

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.

Wouldnt surprise me if the RATS failed to get 51 votes in the Senate to pass a reform bill by reconciliation. But I dont think the vote will happen since it would have to pass the House first, and I dont think it will.
